ModeratorUnable to explain this to myself yet alone tell the customer what is wrong. I have now twice come across cooker hoods that show “live” on my volt stick (you know the neon mains tester that glows when near to a live supply) even after I have unplugged the plug at the socket feeding the hood. (yes I have checked it is the correct one). The volt stick glows all around the steel canopy of the hood, the swtch pcb, motor even the tiles on the cooker splashback but nowhere else in the kitchen. These hoods are not earthed so it is impossible to earth test them although I connected a wire to earth to make it safe for me to work on it. There is no voltage reading between earth and the canopy but still the volt stick lights. I have had this now on 2 seperate MFI hood jobs. Can anyone solve this for me?

Another wierd electrical problem is on Project or ‘Prodis’ glass and dishwashers, the rubber, yes RUBBER, hoses inside the machine are conductive!!!! Must be something in them, caught one of our engineers/technicians a cracker. He tested the hoses with 3 different testers because he couldn’t believe it.

Mark – is it possible the customer has built up a static charge from rubbing the surface with a cloth? Perhaps the charge is being held in one of the components and not discharging when you touch the casing

Might also explain why the buggers keep blowing if the PCB is getting charged

I have read somewhere that eddy currants might be the cause of the volt stick lighting.May be a live cable running under the tiles and the un earthed mass of the hood may be picking it up. Apparently if there is a broken earth on a ring main some some of of the earth conductors will pick up an induced currant from the adjacent lives.

Well they should be!

No need as most cooker hoods are double insulated

Strangely, Martin the last cooker hood I helped a mate to install was 2 wire and no earth. I thought it odd, With that much metal and 230 volts it should have had an earth, But appantly not so according the the install instructions. I can understand double insulation on a vac, But a great lump os steel ❓

Is true they come with only 2 core cable. but within the cavity there are loose hanging cables and razor sharp stainless steel edges.

Martin, i did not write that, (with the question mark) please do not change it and mark it as a quote. They are not earthed and that is not in question.

I beg your pardon but I never added a question mark either as it happens!
Irrespective of whether or not the inclination was questionable, the fact is electrical regulations require all metal parts to be earthed. The motor may be of the double insulated type but the stainless shroud should be connected to an earth loop I think you will find? (now I added that question mark)

Well then where did it come from? its clearly not in my original post. There is no provision for an earth on these or any other hoods I have come across, who knows why and I am not the one who designs or aproves or installs them.

Why the animositity towards me Mark? What’s your problem here? I said I did not put the question mark in, you have my word on that, let’s move on please if you will be so kind? You’re always quick to jump down my throat lately for some reason? Chill out please! 🙂
Anyway, I know full well that many modern cooker hoods do not have an earth feature. The point I’ve made previously is that they should be, and as you have rightly observed, your ‘volt-stick’ picks up residual current (static) from those metal surfaces. Now as you appreciate, if they were linked to the household earth loop, such an alarming observation would’nt exist! 😉

There was a question mark at the very end of Mark’s original post (not related to the earthing incident) and in all likelihood it’s been left in by accident when Martin chopped off the rest of the text. Simple mistake.
Let’s move on please gentlemen – any further discussion might be best suited to private messages.

I agree. This site is supposed to be for the benefit of all in our trade and lately between this and someone moaning about the speed of it, I for one am getting cheesed off with people using this site for arguing.
Look, now you`ve got me moaning on it!
Let`s get back to what this site was supposed to be about………. letting the independents help one another.November 24, 2006 at 4:23 pm #196197Martin
