General Electric is laying off 164 workers at a southern Indiana refrigerator factory, although that is about 30 fewer than the company had anticipated.

Layoff notices were handed out Monday at the Bloomington factory, which will be left with some 530 workers.

The company announced plans last year to close the factory. The company reversed that decision in July, saying government incentives for making energy-efficient appliances there could be extended until 2013.

General Electric says the layoffs are necessary because demand is down 42% over the past three years for the side-by-side refrigerators made at the plant. It says about half those being laid off are eligible for retirement.

GE are also known to be looking to sell its appliance division.
