Hi – Last night it started to drip water from the bottom left hand side – not much, just a few tablespoons. I wiped it up and it stopped, but I couldn’t find any wetness around the seals or anything. I waited a couple of hours and the temprature seemed OK so I had a look inside and under the bottom drawer there is a thick sheet of ice (solid – not like frost). I wonder if maybe a bit of the was caught in the seal and melted. Anyway, Hotpoint wanted a £90 call out charge. Any ideas how this might be solved without an engineer? Thanks.

Try a total defrost for 48 hours to get rid of the ice, it may have been a one off 🙂

If it recurs, an engineer is the answer with these as they are electronically controlled and hard to pinpoint the problem without testing quite a few components.

    Hello

I have the same freezer, with the same ice build up problem.

Thick ice at the bottom of the freezer section.

These are frost free models, do you still need to defrost them from time to time?

    Did defrosting sort your problem?

    Thanks

Hi – I am going to defrost it at the weekend – I had too much stuff in it to do it this week. (Thanks for your reply, Dave).

However, saying that, it happened again last night and I had a close look and the water is in fact not coming from inside the freezer chamber but from the join right at the bottom left hand corner of the fridge where the corner joins together and there is a gap. I can hear a dripping from somewhere inside. 😕

I defrosted the freezer last night and when wiping it round I found a hole in the white lining about 1cm square towards the top where the second basket slots in. Would this account for the water running out of the bottom (assume that there is ice building up on the inside wall outside of the white lining, melting and running out the bottom)? If so is it repairable or am a looking at a new fridge freezer? Also is it dangerous?

Once water freezes in the insulation, I’m afraid it’s doomed. It will drive the temperature sensors out of range, so the machine will start to misbehave and you can never, ever get the water out of the foam.

    Sorry,

Hi – thanks Penguin 45. I had a local independent engineer out on Friday and he cleaned out the drainage thingy – he said it was backing up. He didn’t think the small hole would necessarily affect the running but that now he had done the cleaning out, but only time would tell. He thought the water was running out the bottom because of the blockage. So bearing your advice in mind, I suppose the course of action for me is wait and see rather than dash out and buy a new freezer. he also suggested that if it did continue to misbehave, I should call out a hotpoint engineer because the parts are guaranteed for five years and I shouldn’t expect the lining to be damaged through normal use.
