ParticipantMy trusty Whirlpool AWO3551 has broken down & my after insurance appointed repair chap has visited and the news is not good. It needs a new motor & some circuit board do dah. Anyway the warranty company will not pay citing beyond economical repair & have suggested that they are prepared to replace the machine as an alternative to repair. Does that mean I get a new Whirly like for like? Does it Buffalo, instead I am advised that they are only prepared to replace the machine to a certain value (less deduction for wear and tear) and so they propose to replace my Whirly with a BEKO WMA510 if you please.
Looking at the small print, it seems I have no choice, although I have argued for a cash settlement instead, or pay the difference for something better, but no they won’t budge. It’s the Beko or nothing.
Can anyone advise if the Beko is any good or is it as I suspect a heap of tin?

Like for like WQ that’s not too bad a deal in fact. Slightly better spec from the Beko in real terms so not too bad a deal offered by your insurers.
Pity you could get the cash though and go for a serious up-grade. 🙁
Much better choices these days than a bog standard 5kg 1000rpm machine that’s for sure. Even if you buy one that spins at 1200rpm you will save yourself a fortune in drying times/electric bills. Go for 1500/1600 and then you are getting serious with your laundry, big savings will follow taking that route. 😉

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your advice. I am actually toying with the idea of telling the insurance people no ta to the Beko & paying out of my own pocket for an ISE. The only thing is that on the web site the North East isn’t covered for some reason.
At the very least I think the insurance lot should make a contribution even if its only £50.

Participantwhirlpoolqueen, u really are a star!
at last, a consumer with common sense. and its good to see you’ve also taken in what people have said
i’ve no dealings with ise machines, on paper, and from what the guys on here say, they look a quality item, solidly built and reliable, but i wouldnt like to comment, that wouldnt be fair, since, as i say, ive never come across one!
now… beko… remember our other conversation, the one where i just said the word ‘flavel’?
the reason i said that was because most flavel cookers, as with leisure , and , unfortunately some other very well known makes are all made by the same group… and that group includes BEKO
whilst im sure there are people out there that have been very happy with their beko appliance, they in no way stand up to a whirlpool in terms of build quality.. and parts availability is crap.
now , what would i do? since the insurers want to GIVE u a beko as a replacement, id let em deliver it, sell it on ebay, boxed, and put the money towards something that would make you, hopefully , happy
i really hope this helps. ive really enjoyed reading your posts, like i say its good to have someone around who asks the questions and takes the advice on board!!
good luck, let us know what u decide to do

Ah Shucks you have me glowing now. 😳
I wondered what you meant the other day when you said the F word. LOL! (Flavel) Thanks for the Warning! I am sure the guys at Comet think I am some sort of Price Check Person, because I have been in & out, looking at Cookers as of late & now it’s going to be a new washer. Hi WQ,
Two things…
There’s chaps that repair in the area but not all of them sell round that way. However I’ll have a word with David in the morning and see who’s up that way, or down that way from my perspective. 😉
The other thing is, are you after the ISE5 or the ISE10? If you’re interested in the 10 I can send you some info.

Morning Kwatt,
I am about to commence “Operation Machine” this morning. I have my Yellow Pages at the ready. If you could send me info on the ISE 10 that would be great. I was having a quick peak at John Lewis’s Website last night, they have a branch in town that used to be Bainbridge’s & I am provisionally considering a Miele W1512. I am also prepared to keep an open mind on their own branded machine JLWM1407 and maybe extend the 3yr warranty to a 5yr. I may catch the metro into town later on this morning.
Of course it all hinders on “Neanderthal Tightwad” (my husband) who has been banging his club last night. The not so enlighted Mr. WQ sees nothing wrong with offer of a Free Beko as it were. As according to him, “It’s just a washing machine pet, they aal worrk the same way man”.
I shall remind him of that if we take delivery of the Beko & the house burns down in 2 month due to it’s dodgy motor.
The joys of being married.

Then if that is the case, it will be crossed off my list. Just type Beko into the search facility on this site, enough said!

Thanks for that Don, I am keeping an open mind. (Promise) Even though my head hurts with all the grief of it all.
I also studying Kwatt’s very kind enclosure about the ISE10. Most of the local independant’s around here in Yellow Pages don’t stock the ISE, one guy said he may be able to source one, ring him back after 3pm. Another was could service it, if required. One guy I rang this morning, I may have talked in Mandarin, he hadn’t a clue.
My trip to John Lewis’s was very helpful, they gave me plenty of literature to take away, and I was quite impressed with their own range of machines. One of them is German Engineering with a 3yr warranty and for another £70 extends that to 5yrs. £359 +£70 +£9 removal of old whirly =£438. I have also looked at an Electrolux Insight with Time Management gizmo, which would work out at £539 with 5yr cover.
I am now going to do battle with insurance people, see at least if I can get a better upgrade or some sort of settlement.

ParticipantUpdate
Can I just say I am not anti-Beko to the knickers in a knot brigade who seem hell bent in trying to convert me to the joys of Bekoland.
I have always said it is horses for courses, you buy what you like, what works for you, what ever is within your means. Personally speaking, it’s just I have heard a lot of bad reports about their washers & cookers. Fridges/Freezers No Probs, as same with their Tv’s . I don’t want to go down the road of having something for a year and bang, back to square one again. I have a family member who is ill with Chronic Renal Failure & so I rely very much on my washer when there are little accidents, shall we say.
The update with the insurers is that they are prepared to offer £105 in full & final settlement instead of the Beko, so I have accepted this and should have the cheque by the end of next week.
I have had a real problem trying to get hold of & source an ISE up here in Newcastle upon Tyne. Plenty of people offering to fix one but no people wanting to sell one. I have rang around a large number of local independents all to no avail, so I am going back to John Lewis’s in the morning & I am gonna purchase their own branded machine that is German Engineered. I am gonna extend the warranty to 5yrs and fingers crossed it should be in situ as soon as.
And now, I am off to bed. It has been a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng day.

Hi WQ,
I know we can supply a machine to Newcastle no probs. I don’t know who sells in that area as yet.
The John Lewis machine is, pretty much, a Zanussi so if you’re going to buy into the “German Engineered” claim you have to believe that they are in fact AEG, also owned by Electrolux, when they are made I believe in Italy, or Poland or…. well wherever really. But regardless it most certainly is not German.
You may as well save a few quid, buy a Zanussi and take out the warranty.
As to the remark made by PTO, yes the ISE CI555WH is made in Turkey for us to our spec by Beko. What of it?
It’s like this… you can go along to a factory and you can specify the appliance to have almost whatever you like in it. You can have it built with decent quality components and with a decent spec or, you can choose to have a cheaper machine but loose some of the features and/or the quality.
It’s the same with the Chinese stuff, we all know that they can actually make decent kit but they don’t because that’s not what they’re asked to do, they’re asked to produce the cheapest kit.
I’m quite sure that even Indesit can actually build some decent machines but, as Servis found when they tried a re-launch using some machines built by Asko, no-one would buy them. No-one would buy them because people didn’t believe, by that point, that Servis could actually make a decent machine and they were spanking people up on spares pricing, but that’s moving away from the point.
The point is that any manufacturer can produce good machines if they want to do so, they choose all too often instead to compete purely on price. They do this because, in a superstore, it’s just one long line of very similar white and silver boxes, people can’t tell the differences inside or the cost of ownership so the only things that people go on is the old, looks, badge, reputation, features and energy ratings but, most importantly, price.
Unlike “sexy” goods, like cars and TV’s there is little (if any other than Which and here) information on appliances beyond what you can see in the store, so you have a salesperson’s opinion and the specifications, how do they know how well built it is? Unless you take the trouble to find out about the machines. And, buying off the internet is often even worse, then all you have is a page of the manufacturer’s own specifications and they’re hardly liable to tell you that their machine isn’t that great are they?
