As was pretty much expected, electrical retailer Comet who is currently in administration, has announced that it is to close forty one stores most likely within the next two weeks.

Twenty seven of the Comet stores began their closing down sales yesterday with a further fourteen expected to begin their closing down sales this week as the administrator, Deloitte, continues to seek a buyer for the business. Locations of the stores that are set to be shuttered are as yet unknown.

Redundancies are inevitable although the number is yet to be released it is widely expected to mean the loss of around 800 jobs.

Joint administrator Chris Farrington, said: ‘We are very grateful to the company’s employees for their professionalism, loyalty and support at this difficult time and all employees will of course continue to be paid for all the work they do while the company is in administration.’

From what we can gather from inside the industry this will not be the final list of Comet store closures, it is liable to be a far higher number than those announced unless a buyer for the stricken retailer can be found and, at this point, that seems very unlikely.
