We have had an integrated Neff 1 1/2 double oven grill U1661 for 5 years, which has recently developed an odd fault. When we use the grill in the smaller upper oven the front panel controls get really hot, too hot to touch, and the grill control knob has deformed with the heat. What is likely to cause this ? A cooling fan that has stopped operating, or faulty grill thermostat ?

More likely to do with the cooling system IMO.
When you switch on the oven, do you feel a flow of air from above the doors in each cavity ? If so then the cooling system is ok. If not then either a faulty cooling fan/s or control relay for the fans 😉

Power off if you are to investigate :plug:

You are grilling with door closed I hope.

On the main oven I can feel a small flow of cool air from the vents just above the door. but not from the vents above the small oven/grill.
Can you normailly get to these items without removing the oven form the housing unit ?

For the five years we have had the unit, when we use the gtrill, mainly for toasting, we never have shut the door and the controls did not get hot, until now ? Is it wrong to do this ?

Unfortunately you will have to extract to gain access.
If you can give the full model number off the oven, that will be handy in correctly identifying parts you may need 😀
BSH-MAN made a valid point though, you must grill door closed as failure of cooling fan would not result in a deformation of knobs under normal operation 😕

    Hi
Cooling fan on both the GB/01 and 02 is 140210. If required the spare is available from spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk 😉

Do you think the fan is more likely to be faulty than the control/relay ? The other fan comes on ok so I guess the fan is more likely ?

A quick test with a multimeter on ohms setting on fan terminals (with the power off to appliance) should indicate whether its ok or faulty.
Although sometimes they can read ok but they cannot turn due to worn bearing/s or grease ingress causing restrictions 😕

I checked and the fan resistance was fine. I removed it from the oven and powered it from the mains. I could see it was rotating slowly and sometimes almost stopping. I took it apart and cleaned it up and it runs fine now.
So for the moment looks good.
    Thanks for the help.

Glad you sorted but for future readers safety please do not carry out any live testing of any kind on any appliance, there really is no need :plug:
