ParticipantHi,
My Smeg dishwasher has suddenly started coming up with error code E3 – saying unable to heat the water.
Is this a relatively easy problem to fix?
Cheers,
Dave

Can be heating element – fairly straightforward to fix; often the computer board though, which is expensive.
Power off, if investigating.

Start with heater – you should get 25-30ohms when metered.
Power off, if you plan to do this yourself.

Or Reset stat (red button on top) worth a push 😀

Ok, pushed the reset button..
Ohms reading is 28.1
Just run the dishwasher again on a different programme and it has come up with the same error; however, there is heat in the machine. So it looks like it has heated up and is tripping off…
I then turned it off and back on and got the following two lights flashing..
Any ideas?

4+5 is a spurious code. Use Search for ‘smeg AND reset’ to clear.
Point re. heating – you say there seems to be some heat; is that water actually hot? If it is, you may have a circulation problem. The temperature sensor is in the door panel by the dispenser, so if the water is not being sprayed, heat will not be detected. Give it a minute or two after circulation starts and pop the door open quickly – you should get wet! Also, did the re-set stat go “click” when you pressed it? If it had tripped out, it would fit into the poor circulation scenario.
Random flashing lights can be caused by an issue with the soap dispenser solenoid – a replacement dispenser may be required.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
Thought 4&5 would be..it clears itself if I turn it back off again, just added it in to be sure.
I’ve popped the door open, and no I don’t get wet at all…and yes the re-set of the stat did go “click”
So does this mean there is a blockage somewhere then? Where’s the best place to start looking for the blockage?

Dave

It *probably* means that the impellor has sheared off the circulation motor, providing that you can hear the motor running. There is a replacement housing and impellor available – you don’t need to buy the whole motor assembly. Check it out – fairly major dis-assembly required.

Ok thanks for that. Yes the dishwasher makes all the right noises apart from not spraying water all over the place.
Where’s this impeller and what’s the best way of removing it all?

Dave

Circulation pump is in the rear left corner underneath. If you release the heater from the front of the pump, you may be able to spin the impellor in the housing – it should feel “heavy” when turned. If it’s loose or just rattling about, it has sheared off.

OK, after the fill stage has finished, can you hear a faint humming noise? Ear to casing to check.

Yeah certainly can. What strikes me as odd is that when you expect it to make the splashing noises from the upper arm rotating around, that doesn’t happen.

Hurrah! You need one of these:
http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/product_ … ucts_id=95Motor start/run capacitor. It effectively boots the motor up the backside to make it go. If it stops charging, power goes to the motor (the hum), but it won’t start.
