ParticipantUsual story… FF72S freezing freezer, warm fridge.
New control board in 2005, new evaporator thermistor in 2006, this time replaced both thermistors…. but to no avail.
Unusually the freezer compartment fan is not running ? The fan does run when the machine in first switched on (just for a second or two). Thorough defrost performed, defluffed, fan at back is running, drain tube clear, door switch works fine (makes no difference to fan)……
Would be appreciate any further suggestions (last rights maybe ?). Patience ran out.
Wiggy.

There are three thermistors – which two did you change? Secondly, did you do a full defrost (ie appliance off for 48 hours) before or after you changed the two thermistors? Did you check that the flow and return air vents were clear of ice?

Thanks guys – I replaced part nos 2601683 & 2600283, these are the yellow & green internal ones – wheres the third and what should the IR rating be so I can check it ?
I did a 24 hour defrost (heat assisted !) though I accept this may not be enough. I have removed the grill in the fridge and poked an 18″ long wire – it appeared free but where does it go to ?
In the freezer I pushed the same wire up the conduit in the top left hand corner. Would the ice effect the fan (which is free of ice) ?

Total defrost, internal fan still not running.
Could be the third thermistor ? Where is it ?
All suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

It is up in the baffle in the fridge compartment, the fan in the freezer will not run until the evaporator is down to about-18.
As a test for the fan knock the appliance off then with the fridge door open switch it back on after a couple of second close it and you will initialise a short test which will bring the freezer fan on for a short while.it should prove it is ok.HTH.February 12, 2008 at 9:53 pm #242916wiggy781

Thanks Kiddo – the test worked, as you suggest the fan ran for a couple of seconds. So as I thought the fan is good.
Where do I go from here – could it be the third thermistor. Everything seems fine – apart from the fact the freezer fan is not running ?
Is the a board problem ?
Thanks again.

It could be the board, but you need to check what temperature you are getting in the freezer attach a digital thermometer to the freezer evaporator and it needs to be below -18 or the fan wont cut in,if it isnt reaching that temperature then i would suspect you have a poor pumping compressor or gas leak.

hi, just going back to your first post, the door switch SHOULD make a difference to the freezer fan, the fan should only run with the fridge door shut!, if you can open the fridge door and the fan continues to run there could be a problem there somewhere, or if the fridge door has dropped a little it may not be allowing the fan to run

The built in freezer thermometer is showing -22, and the borrowed digital thermometer is showing around -24. I note that the evap thermistor is held in a plastic clip – does the end actually need to touch the metal ? What should the resistance be at -18 ?
I have concluded that the fan is good and the door switch works fine. The fan does not run regardless of whether the fridge door is open or not (with the freezer at -22). The fan only runs on start up.
What is the purpose of the third thermistor in the fridge ?
Thanks for your support.

the thermistor in the fridge senses the fridge temp and then tells the module if the baffle and fan needs to be opened and run to cool the fridge

what temp is the fridge display showing?

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint Mistral…. different diagnosis ?
The fridge displays room ambient temp.
How do you check that the baffle opens / closes as it should ?
Not sure whether this is a baffle problem as the fan in the freezer does not run exept on initial start up. The problem from what I can see is that the fan is not getting the ‘signal’ to run.
Any further suggestions before I take it to the tip ?…………

well if the fridge temp is showing too high and the fan is still not running, then the baffle position should make no difference (if the baffle was stuck shut then the fan would still be trying to pump air up to the fridge), so it sounds like either a faulty fan, (it may work a few seconds then fail) or no power to the fan,but module failures on these are very very rare,

Thanks for the help.
I have removed evaporator fan and tested – works fine, had it running 20 mins plus without a hick up.
Devoid of any further suggestions I have come to the conclusion the problem is with the control board – not worth spending £100 plus on an 8 year old machine.
I am considering replacing it with a large fridge and seperate under worktop freezer. I would appreciate any recommendations for a quality brand !
Cheers for the assistance Wiggy.
