ParticipantStory time from uncle Mal!!!! again ๐
Here I sit a bit flush with a few pound notes (end of year, accountants advice) so me thinks update the old PC. this ones lasted ten years and is written off the books.
Did think of buying a years supply of a good malt and a couple of pole dancers ๐ but I have been advised that they are not
tax deductable or something , I will doulbe check though ๐
I proceeded to my local high street computer shop to seek advice. I was approached by a plookey youth (join the dots and make a picture ) “can I elp yer” ๐ Yes I am interested in updating my office PC and would like something that will still work in ten years โ , OK he says I’ll just print this off for you ๐ he proceeds to give me two leaflets with nice pictures of a few PC’s. then he wades into what can only be described as Clingon. ๐ฏ ๐ฏ ๐ฏ
The malt and pole dancers were looking good at this stage ๐
Anyway I asked to have a look at the top of the range Intel 2core Quad thingy, only to be advised that he did not have one in the shop but would get one built ๐ for monday AM (Yesterday) So monday I popped in as I was passing only to be told “oh I forgot to fetch it” it’ll be here tomorrow. Tues day today, the excuse for a salesman forgot it again.
Gave em a chance they have blown it ๐
So here I sit in a quandry, should I look around or should I build my own? shouldn’t be to hard, i’ve fixed Indesits ๐I do fancy building one based around the above processor but the jargon that is out there is just “doing my ed”
Can any of you computer nerds give any advice, I also use the PC for music recording, video editing, a bit of flying the old Focker (MS Fight sim)
and occasionally writing rubbish like this :rolls:February 12, 2008 at 11:37 pm #243151Penguin45

I just build my own when I need one.
If I have to buy one as Iโve no time I usually use Dell. The XPS range is nice if you want performance but beyond that youโre into custom builds really.

10 years, โ Jeez I have had 7 in that period, none broken either. Just had to update to run all the things needed. All legitimate business expense needless to say.

I usually build my own but have found not a great deal of difference in price between a DIY PC and the Dell machines and the Dell often get good reviews.
It’s also worth noting if you check the net for comparable machines that are a better price and then call Dell they will negotiate to make a sale.
The biggest problem with the Dell machines is all the *{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}$* demo ware they put on the machine, when you try and remove it the machine falls over. Answer to this though is call them up a couple of days after purchase and complain, if you reinstate the machine with the backup already on the hard drive it will reinstall all the *{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}$* demo ware again so they will send you a CD without all the other rubbish.
If you do go down the road of building your own then check out the bundles at either http://www.Dabs.com or http://www.novatech.co.uk.

Bought my last two desktops and lappy from Novatech. No useless garbage preloaded, just a clean Windows install if you want it, all virtually problem free. 8)
Just bought the wife a nice little HP laptop from John Lewis but the amount of useless rubbish they preload is really annoying, I spent several hours trying to get rid of it as much as I could safely ditch. ๐ฟ

Hi guys I had a look at pricing a home build and as Twoten says there not much difference with manufacturers kit , I have had a look at Dell systems and compared them to Mesh who seem to have similar specs. but a bit cheaper, I have narrowed it down to this model. Any advice on Mesh?

Just watch compatibility problems as I had a few issues with running Vista. ๐
That said I run it at home and it seems stable enough, upgrades are a no-no though, but not as stable as the Mac with OSX Leo.
The only thing to watch really is stuff that is not Vista compatible, like manufacturerโs programs and the likes, as they might baulk at it and, even in supposed โcompatibility modeโ some stuff still wonโt run.
Other than that it looks a pretty decent machine Mal.

If you like having a back seat driver nagging you all the bloody time you will love Vista, there are lots of people out there making a fortune reverting PC’s back to XP. ๐ฅ

Yeah, I forgot that. ๐ณ
The supposed increased security in Vista is a right royal PITA. Networking has gone from being a simple thing to something thatโs just stupidly complex.
User accounts… letโs not got there eh?

Yes you can, Just insert the disk and one of the options it will eventually give you is to format the HD. Do that and it will wipe everything clean and then install XP for you.
on the other hand you can always dual boot XP and Vista. (I do on this PC). This will give you 30 seconds when you switch on the PC to choose which operating system you want to use, after 30 secs it will choose the default system and boot that.

If you have a genuine Windows XP disc (comes in the Windows cd case with a manual) then you can reinstall it on another pc as long as you don’t continue to use it on the old pc (i.e. if you try to do the Windows updates on 2 pcs running under the same licence they’ll lock you out). You can keep moving your disc from pc to pc as long as you only use it on one at a time – Windows logs your motherboard details to do this.If you have a pre-installed copy of XP and have a recovery installation type of disc (such as you’d get with Dell and the like) then your licence is only valid for that particular pc and is not supposed to be transferrable. If you try to install it on a new system it can flag up as suspicious and lock you out. You may have to phone them and say you had a hardware (motherboard) failure and and require an activation code for installing it on a new pc if this is the case.
