ParticipantThis Fisher and Paykel ED56 dryer powers up, the usual light display and jingle but after selecting dryer settings and pressing “start/pause” the machine does not start.
The machine has not done a lot of work so I don’t think the motor should be worn out.
I read somewhere that the motor start capacitor on these models is poor???
Any clues please?

Can you hear a hum after pressing start/pause?
If you can, then it’s the motor or capacitor. If there is a series of beeps when you press the start/pause switch, check that you have not broken the pin on the door that operates the door switch

The pin that operates the door switch looks OK and I tried starting with the door open and I got beeps after pressing start/pause so I guess this means all is well with the door switch.
I’m not getting any unusual beeps with the door shut.
No I can’t hear any humming but there is a VERY faint metallic clicking if I listen hard, almost like something is warming up and causing expansion creaks metal to metal if that makes sense to you.
Do these dryers have a diagnostic mode like the F & P washers???
Just a suggestion but this machine belongs to my elderly mother and could she have punched any buttons on this that could prevent normal operation??? I can see a button with a padlock symbol maybe a childproof lock??
I have only tried to operate this on default settings and a few variations on default, didn’t want to get too creative as I don’t like complex modern appliances.
Thanks for your suggestions,

Press and hold the padlock button until it beeps, maybe she has set the kiddie lock. Didn’t think to mention that as I thought it would be too obvious. LOL.
Dryer Controllers dont give much trouble.

I fiddled with the kiddie lock button and if I was doing it right (mum lost the manual for this machine) it shows a red LED when activated so I don’t think that is the problem but it was worth a shout LOL.
Do the F & P dryers have a diagnostic mode like the washing machines?, if so how do I get that happening?
Cheers,
