ParticipantI tend to fit SKF and 2RS (waterproof) “class C3” if I can get them at a reasonable price. Seme are good for these. If the machine is a bit of a banger and the job has to be done on a tight budget or I just can’t get the better bearings at a good price, then I will fit the ZZ’s.
My question is: Am I over doing it? And secondly, what does “class C3” mean anyway?

You are probably not over doing it as I have fitted many sets of genuine Hotpoint bearings that sound really rough when you start them up. 😥
I always use a bearing puller but it makes no difference 😥Graham

Hi Turbo, you sure it’s not just the noisy motor bearings getting transferred through the belt? (Assuming you’re referring to 95/WM series).

No, I have had some that feel rough straight out of the packet needless to say I dont fit them and send them back.

Had a word with Bearing Services ltd. once when I need a specific bearing, advised me that they had several manufacturers suppling the same bearing prices ranged from a couple of quid to £60 odd only difference was the quality and place of manufacture 😕
I also priced one for my lathe, £630!!!!!! 😯

Somebody once told me that the reason we can buy bearings so cheaply is that even though they may be a good quality make, they are very slightly out of tolerance for use in other industries. This doesn’t matter in our business, but they may have been rejected for, say, military or aircraft use.
Whether it’s true or not I don’t know, but it sounds reasonable. Could explain turbo’s experience.

You definitely don’t want to put dodgy bearings in a turbo…….

OK. Found it while searching for a good quality 6305.

The major manufacturers (SKF for example) make their bearings to spec. Tolerance levels versus price. Military and aviation insist on top spec naturally and so forth down the line. At the bottom end we have washing machine bearings and in 99.9{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of cases the bearings are ”lubed for life’ however that long is and the factors involved. Those same spec bearings would fair 1000 times longer if constantly immersed in a lubricant bath (i.e oil sump). No military or aviation spec allows bearings to run unless they function fully lubricated anyway.
So ultimately ‘ZZ’ encased bearings from the likes of SKF are the best on offer in our trade and the applications required of them are good enough in my book.
Wouldn’t do if they lasted too long beyond the warranty period anyway would it? Half the indies I know make a living just out of bearing changes anyway – come on guys live the dream! 8)

Martin, are you saying we should fit low quality bearings in order to ensure an adequate supply of future work? If so, I would disagree. I would say it was better to spend a little more and therefore reduce the frequency of BER’s. A second bearing job within two or three years might cause the customer to decide against keeping the machine, thus doing me out of a couple of nice easy brush/pump jobs. Since ZZ is only dust proof, I would think 2RS, being waterproof (maybe not completely so but better than not at all) would tolerate minor leakage past the water seal a lot longer.
I have noticed that some SKF are made in France, some in Italy, and some in Malaysia (I say that from memory). Maybe other countries too.
I presume the order I have listed there would be the higher quality first?

Not at all, I never said that! What I said was: –

I don’t know that they come any better that that Mike TBH?
But, I’ve just had a thought though. 💡
I know Ken has sourced the best possible ballrace bearings available as the remit for all his ISE machines. Have a word with Ken. 😀

bearing in mind 😆 our use of bearings is not a safety issue then the use of high quality bearings is, imo, a waste of money. Whats more our use is at the very bottom end of the stress level they are designed for. How many of our bearing changes are due to worn or damaged bearings? A tiny percentage at a guess.
I think the poised question should be: what are the best quality bearing seals and where do you buy?February 7, 2009 at 9:27 am #259712maltheviking

I think the poised question should be: what are the best quality bearing seals and where do you buy?Spot on this is where the problems is , the seals. I had no confidence in replacing bearings on some machines because of the seals, Hotpoint ended up changing the drums 4 times on theb WMA series. IMO it is stupid to offer to repair mark 1,2 or 3 drums, even fitting the later drum assy. is a tad risky of a call back under gtee.
Anyway the sealed drum assy which ALL the manufacturers are now starting to fit will cut bearing changes down to zilch. 😥February 7, 2009 at 10:42 am #259713Phidom

I’ve taken to dismantling the 2 part seals on WMA and WF Hotpoints and putting extra grease on the moving surfaces as they tend to be supplied almost or completely unlubricated. I did a top of the range Ariston machine this week and found the bearing cross was still full of machining swarf. There was no rust on the old bearings so I don’t thing the seal had failed. I suspect some of the swarf had got into them.

Can anyone tell me why some makes and models have a bleed hole for water to escape, e.g. Hotpoint WM, whilst some don’t e.g. Zanussi split tubs.?
