Samsung just isn’t getting any respite this past week or so with stuff going wrong for them all over the place with the latest PR disaster coming by way of John McAfee, the internet security guy.
So some bright spark went into a store in the USA, Home Depot, and got up the Pornhub website in that big 32” monitor that Samsung’s slapped on the front of their latest smart fridge freezer.
We’re guessing that’s not the sort of advert that Samsung wants to see although, in fairness, easier to defend than having stuff go on fire, rattle itself apart and so forth as has been going on. But, it’s early days yet, there’s still time for this range of fridge freezers to manifest other unintended party tricks.
The image appeared on Reddit a few days before McAfee posted it but, soon as he did, the Twitterverse went into meltdown over it, news sites picked it up and the rest is legend.
It does however raise a couple of very valid points.
First and foremost is one of the things that we keep banging on about with connected appliances, security. Or lack thereof, just as McAfee is saying, in his own “unique” way.
We think that what he’s trying to highlight is that, if you can pull up dodgy porn sites then how secure is this machine and what could you have happen to it that is unwanted. And, it’s a fair point to make as any number of iOT products have been berated for security issues and, let’s face it, Samsung is one of them so the level of confidence we’d have that this was secure would be… well, not any really.
The next thing is that you don’t exactly want your kids to come down to see something like that on you Samsung Family Hub do you?
Even if it is a bit of a joke, there are valid concerns in it.
