Not to let all the limelight fall solely on it’s arch nemesis, LG, Samsung also launched a Wi-Fi fridge at CES Las Vegas so you can control your fridge with your phone. Great huh?
Well, maybe not so great as I can’t really see people falling over themselves to sign up and, more importantly, pay a lot of cash for something they’ll use once (maybe) think, “heh that’s cool” then proceed to never use. Ever.
But, for your delight there’s some more information on this Titanic of fridges after the break.
Thankfully when trying to do a bit of research for this piece I found out I wasn’t the only on that though the notion of connected appliances was just plain stupid.
So, here’s the thing Mr Samsung (and, for that matter, LG, Whirlpool and whoever else does this next), anything that you can do on the door of a fridge I can do better with an iPad or a £200 Android based tablet PC. You know, stuff like looking at the internet, jotting shopping lists as notes (considerably easier to take the tablet to Tescos rather than the fridge), getting the news, just surfing the net and so on.
The big, big glaring *YOU HAVE FAILED* is in that I can take the tablet, with a recipe on it to where I’m actually cooking. With it on the door of a fridge, I have to keep running back and forwards to the fridge to check that the right quantity of whatever is going it.
Plus I’m six foot plus, I have to bend over to read the screen. I can hold or sit the tablet at any angle I like and, more importantly, is comfortable.
Then, when I’m done with that I can flick back to another app and shuffle off somewhere else to read a book, browse the net, play Angry Birds or whatever I like.
You kinda can’t do that on a screen that’s fixed into a fridge or freezer door.
Sorry guys, I’m not buying it and I suspect that not many other people will either.
