I have a 7 year old hotpoint wma63s. The bearings appear to have gone – terrible rumbling/ knocking and about 5-10mm play on the drum. The machine is fine otherwise, is it worth repairing? I am mechanically minded and feel I could take the job on myself, if it is worth doing.
If I did the job I would get the bearings and tub seal, would it be worth getting the drum spider as well? Is there anything else I have missed out?Any advice is greatly appreciated.

hi, not the worst to change, personally i do 50/50 bearings/rear half complete, depends how it looks when you strip it down, drum needs to come out, (not hard), then seperate the 2 halves, (easy), only when you get the inner drum out will you know if you need a spider,
the bearings can be knocked out & replaced, easier way is to fit a new rear half, with bearings already fitted, plus a new seal for between the 2 drum halves,
All the parts can be obtained from the shop@ here,
As for being worth repairing, the WMA are a well built machine so i would say its worth doing,

Thanks for the advice, I think I will have a go at repairing it. As the machine is still in use, I would rather get all the parts before I take it apart. As the bearing is well knackered (when you spin it by hand, when it slows down, the drum will “drop” on the shaft / bearing) do you think it is worth getting a spider and replacing it as a matter of course, to save downtime on the machine?

The spider is usually OK on these as it does not have a bronze bush to get damaged like you get on most other machines. If you do order a spider you should also get new fixing screws as they rust in. The most difficult job will be removing the outer race of the front bearing. The front bearing is nearly always in bits, balls broken in half etc.

pmac, just a check first, but if you say the inner drum ‘drops’ does it sound noisy if you turn the drum by hand whilst supporting the inner drum?, as i have seen these supports break on their own, which often gives the knocking noise and would also mean the drum ‘drops’, the other way to check if its bearings or support, is, remove the top,(with the plug out of course) move the inner drum up/down where the play is, if the pulley on the back moves with the play its bearings, however if the pulley does not have the same play, it will be a broken support

Thanks for the advice guys. Stripped it down this afternoon, as it sounded terrible on a wash this morning! It came apart ok, found the rear bearing ok, but the front one had totally collapsed – it was just running on the inner and outer races – some of the balls were actually gound in half!. Got the old races off and cleaned up the sleave and shaft – no damage to these at all, the old races bore the brunt of it – how lucky am I? (wish I had bought a lottery ticket)
I have ordered a new bearing set and a tub seal from the shop on here.
I have also given it a thorough clean in readyness for the new parts.
Should do another 7 years now!
(will also replace the rear bearing as well)

Yes, you must fit all parts of the new bearing kit. Which bit do you mean when you mention the “sleave”?

What I call the sleave, is the alloy bit in the tub that the outer races of the bearings sit in. I don’t know it’s proper name!
Hopfully new parts will turn up tomorrow, so I can get the thing working again.Thanks

yep that should be fine for you then, just be sure to tap them in evenly, worth running some emery tape round the sleave/collar 1st to remove any rust, i then give a quick spray with some spray lubricant to help them back in, also be a bit carefull with the seal infront of the inner bearing, will be either metal on 35mm or rubber on 30mm sets, take care that it fits right in tight & flat,

no, if the old ones come out, its not a problem, as i mentioned, ive fitted many bearing sets without any problems, (so far!!)

Thanks for all your valued help and advice.
Fitted the new parts, and put it back together today. Its like a new machine, it is so quiet now, you can hold a conversation whilst standing next to it! Did a “service wash” to get rid of all the crud I disturbed, and now the wife is catching up (trying to kill it again!) with the washing.Thanks Again for all your help and advice.

Hi All,
I am aware that this is an old forum that I am tagging onto but we have the same problem with our WMA63 washing machine and this forum explains it very well.
I am trying to decide between buying a bearing kit or a complete drum.
I have removed the drum from the machine and removed the front of the outer drum but I can not see how to remove the inner drum from the rear outer drum. Do I need special tools?
Any advise would great.

ParticipantI was afraid of that.
Do I use the screw hole for the pulley wheel to pull the shaft back into the new bearings?
How is the seal put in place inside?Looking online I can get a complete assembled drum for £160. Maybe this is a safer bet.
