    Hello,

My trusty Hoover AE230-001 has the following problem:

-It starts to spin erratically at slow speed, when the spin speed picks up it trips the RCD on my consumer unit.

Sounds like it could be a bearing / motor having to make extra effort, however the drum spins smoothly by hand with no additional resistance.

From searching on this forum it could also be the armature failing and causing problems at higher spin speeds, does this sound likely, a new motor is around £90 which is a fair chunk of the cost of a new machine.

    Thanks in advance

    Ben

    Outline article HERE.

Motor brushes are in this group HERE.

Stay safe, power off before any investigation.

Should have added that the brushes were replaced a few months ago, does not necessarily rule them out but unfortunately unlikely.

Yep, tried it again this evening and it started to go into a very fast spin suggesting excessive motor current through a shagged armature.

At the age of the machine (7 years) I suspect a new one will make more sense since a motor is £90 job. Will look for a replacement with a brushless motor !

Thanks to all for help / suggestions

    Cheers
