no but the only difference appears to be the band / carbon brush strip would that cause a problem if the brush ran directly on the drum ?

The stainless band around the drum is mounted on a plastic strip to insulate it from the earth. The metal bars on the paddles are connnected to the band by springs to complete the resistivity circuit. If the brush is running against a plain metal drum, you have a circuit to earth and the sensor circuit will not function.

    Correct drum is essential.
