New Delhi, Jan. 5: The good times are back for the washing machine industry. After a gap of two years, the industry has recorded a double-digit growth at 10.7 per cent in 2003.

The washing machine industry sold a total of 11.98 lakh units, with the fully automatic segment registering a growth of 19.4 per cent and the semi-automatic segment 10.1 per cent.

“The percentage contribution of the fully automated segment stands at 18.6 per cent, while that of semi-automatic machines stands at 78.8 per cent,” says the latest ORG data released on the consumer durable industry.

Industry figures show that in 2002, the contribution of the fully automatic washing machine segment stood at 17.4 per cent, while the semi-automatic segment stood at 74.1 per cent.

With an endeavour to ensure strong washing machine sales during this winter season, consumer durable giant Samsung India Electronics today launched an all-India special promotion offer called “dil se dil milao” to boost sales and add excitement around this product category.

Keeping in view the Indian consumer mind-set, Samsung has packaged the promotion campaign with the offer of gifts worth Rs 3 crore. These gifts include a frost-free refrigerator and microwave oven, Singer hand blender, a Santro Xing car and another mega prize.

“With India facing a huge water crisis specially in urban cities during summer, we have in the recent past introduced economical power wash leading to time and water saving. For instance, the eco-wash feature in the ‘i control’ fully automatic washing machine promises less water consumption than its earlier versions,” Samsung India Electronics director (sales) Ravinder Zutshi said.
