Just had a call back to this machine.
1st heater went June 06
2nd went Jan 07

Customer says she regularly tops up the salt and always scrapes the plates as well as cleans the filter.
When I fitted the last elements I cleaned the float chamber hose to sump.
I’ve fitted quite a few of these now and never had problems like this.

if the machine is over foaming can cause premature failure ie; 5 in one tabs + salt + rinse aid or if she pre washes in sink and dont wash all of fairy off of pans can have the same result.

She stooped using the 5 in 1 tabs a while ago because I suspected it could be a problem.
I don’t think she pre-washes in the sink, I only suggest customers scrape the plates off before putting in the dishwasher.

I had the same happen this year on a bosh dishwasher 6 months after fitting element
It went again . I have fitted these on lots of other machines and never had one go again.???. I did not have to pay for the element again, got a replacement under g tee
But had to fit the bl…..dy thing for free… 🙁😕 But…….. we have a bosh dishwasher at home and when I was in the kitchen the other day it was making a odd sound so I opened the door to find a plastic jug that we use had been pushed over buy the water jets and had then been filled up with water.from the spraying arms which had then made the machine under fill in the sump by almost one pint ..thus making the water pressure lower being sprayed around…. Could this of happen on the machines that we fixed ,and made the element run to hot…….??? this happend again with the same jug so i now make sure its on the top rack and wedge it in so it stays upside down….

If the water level’s too low , the heater shouldn’t switch on as there’s not enough water pressure to ativate the membrane of the pressure swutch that is intergrated into the IWH .
We have had a few probs with repeated failures on some Bosch D/W’s but no-one’s really sure why .

This was my thinking too, also I would have thought the same would apply if the machine foamed up during the wash.

So far, touch wood, I’ve not had a recall after fitting an instanteneous water heater but I’m wondering if it is associated with those heaters fitted with water point divertor units?
You guys that have had problems, were they all perhaps units of this type I wonder? 😕

Its the motor/disc in the heater box that switches between the top and bottom spray arms .
I’ve never really noticed but as it seems to occur in later models , which all tend to have the water point , i suppose that may be true. I will have to keep an eye on it.
I will say that i’ven only had about 3 or 4 machines in 3 years that have had a repeated heater failure.

I thought it might be that but most of the instantaneous heaters I’ve fitted have had the divertor fitted.

If you take any faulty element apart you will notice that they almost always fail at the coiled end. The end that’s under the metal plate and the part that usually gets a coating of limescale (in hard water areas of course 😉 )
The water point diverter is also at that end and it is the hottest and weakest point in any immersion element as a rule too.
Another point to possibly note is whether or not the customer frequently uses the hottest longest cycle as the norm so to speak? That would confirm at least the failure more prone to longer hotter wash selection…maybe?

had one of these do this when i worked for comet, replaced the pressure pot and seemed to cure it. My thinking was the the blocked pressure pot causes the high fill microswitch to stay on activating the heater.

Great theory but I’m afraid that’s not right as the power to the heater is controlled at all times via the microswitch on the heater unit. To my certain knowledge they never give problems. 😉
