ParticipantEvening all, this has got me puzzled and embarrassed, I am a Spark by trade and tried to fix my daughters cooker, thought it was the thermal cut out, replaced like for like but still the problem persists. The plug from the cooker gets red hot , the live pin so I thought it was the thermal cut out.
Is it the thermostat?
Can anybody help before I buy another part I do not need? Thanks

Participanterm, forgive me ,but , sureley that machine should be hard wired, not on a plug top?
we’ve disussed this before, and ive never seen one on a 13 amp plug top, theyre always wired to a cooker point with 2.5 cable!

Ah, you could be correct, this cooker came to my daughter with a plug top on it ( given to her by father in law) it has been used for over a year now without problem plugged into the socket (flex is 2.5mm cable) and it does not detract from the fact that the cable is getting hot as well as the plug top.
At least with a plug top it is protected by a 13a fuse.

you need to think about this carefully,
if the cable is getting hot and its 2.5 mm it has to be drawing more than 13 amps.i would avise you to contact an appliance engineer.

Participantyep, but when th oven is on convection, its running TWO elements, top and bottom
and you claim to be a spark?

I was asking advice and it was greatly recieved, there was absolutely no need for the comment questioning my ”claim to be a spark”
I am not a domestic appliance engineer and as the cooker has run without problem for over a year I assumed that there was something causing the overheating problem.
I was asking the experts and hoping to get a solution.

Participantim sorry if my comment offended, it wasnt meant to
i see a lot of people in your predicament, and the question is always the same.. that being, why has it worked for over a year?
well, that is a good question, and i just cant answer it i just know that it needs to be on a cooker point, as the total consumption can and does exceed 13 amps
please accept my apology, i often state that messages can often be missread or missunderstood, depending how people percieve it, so im sorry if i offended
i think youll find if you hard wire it to a proper cooker point, it will cure your problem, like a lot of people, u maybe looked a bit hard into the problem that your having, when the solution is relatively simple
hope this has helped

Apology accepted, Already decided to install new circuit at the weekend , what you say makes good sense.
Been putting off replacing her consumer unit for a while now so I think I will do the whole thing ( and get me part P mate to sign it off!!)
ThanksDecember 4, 2008 at 9:01 am #270570Martin

That’s a point, new circuits need a Part P spark to install it I believe? Do they also need 17th edition training? 😕

ParticipantAlthough I prefer it, its not a given that a 900mm single cavity multifunction oven has to have a cooker socket, for example a Stoves 900dfa can run from a 13amp supply, Stoves always recommend using a fused spur though for a better and more stable connection than a 3 pin plug, if the plug is getting red hot it may suggest that arching may be happening within the socket, the exact reason why Stoves recommend a spur.

These type of ovens use 13 amps and is spread over several elements
most have 2 main elements at 2300w a turbo fan element at 2500w
and a grill at 2400w
oven should be hard wired not pluged
ovens pron to burn out 1st connection block at point of cable attached to cooker also main cooker multi switch prone to burn out
if main multi switch burn out some oven fuctions will work but will pull in more watts causing breaker tripping or cable over heatingDecember 11, 2008 at 8:24 am #270573Phidom
ParticipantRe: ELBA PX906 Cable overheating
The official position regarding 2.5 mm flex is that it is too big to go in a 13 amp plug.
