NEWTON, Iowa – The Maytag repairman has something to snack on, while he waits for a call. Maytag blue cheese.
Now, the cheese has developed a cult following among gourmets. The Maytag name is no coincidence. The cheese was developed by the grandsons of washing machine inventor Frederick Maytag.
During the Depression, the Maytag dairy supplied the washing machine factory workers with milk. The dairy is still family owned and the cheese is still handmade.
A four-pound wheel of Maytag blue goes for about $43, directly from the Newton, Iowa, plant.
