What used to be Knox County’s largest employer is finally paying up, but under protest.
The county received a $94,000 check from Maytag Corporation on Wednesday to help settle a proposed lawsuit for unpaid property taxes.
The check came with a letter from Maytag’s vice president saying the company would be filing a formal protest to receive a refund.
The money will be used to help the local school district.
Maytag shut down its Galesburg plant at the end of last year, laying off around 1,600 employees.
