Those of us who are old enough and have decent memories will recall some innovative stuff that’s been mooted over the years, such as ultrasonic washing machines from Japan and the like; the latest is refrigeration powered by magnets. 

 The claim is that these units can operate with a lot less power but, as is explained in this video, the need for complex systems both operationally and in production plus the need to use rare earth materials makes us think that, at least for domestic use, this will never see production or at least, not in our lifetimes.

As you can see, these are, for now, bulky, expensive to produce and not all that much better (if any) than a standard refrigeration unit that you can buy today. And, it would seem that not many manufacturers are showing any interest in this type of cooling product, which, given the caveats, is no real surprise. 

However, it was an interesting dive into this work and possibly allows people to see just how good the units we have presently are actually very good indeed, all things considered.
