Dyson has come up with a new vacuum cleaner, the PencilVac with what can only be regarded as some new innovations built into it.
As many know, we’re not huge fans of Dyson but, you have to hand it to them, this one is pretty good.
Firstly they’ve managed to minuturise a motor for this thing that fits inside a 38mm diameter handle that spins up to a claimed 140,000rpm, that is by any measure, pretty impressive.
Of course, how well this vac performs in the real world remains to be seen but, the demos and info we’ve sen so far suggests it is actually pretty good.
Next up is the (we reckon) not well named Fluffycones head.
What they’ve done is make conical-shaped brush rolls so that hair picked up wraps around them, travels along the brush roll and is ejected at the open ends, the rols are only held in place at one end. This is also clever stuff.
But they’ve made those so that they counter-rotate in two pairs of two which also means that it’s easy to whizz the cleaner about again, we’d have to have the chance to test one to confirm that but it does make sense. And this also allows you to get right up to the edges of walls etc without any problems.
They also showed off what we’re calling “shotgun” style dust emptying, it’s also cleverly done where the dust is packed into the handle nd efected in a pump action shotgun type motion.
First, there’s an app to connect to the vac, though, quite why you really need that we don’t know.
This cleaner isn’t a large capacity machine and as such is probably not intended as a main vacuum or for use in larger homes as the only option you have, and it seems more targeted at hard floors as opposed to carpeted ones.
It’s also complex, with three motors, one in the handle, two in the Fluffycone head unit as wel as the other stuff going on and, that gets us to pricing.
There are no official prices outside of Japan as yet where it’s approximately $600-ish and that will equate to around £450 or thereabouts so, it’s not a cheap thing or an impulse buy for most people.
