We have mooted this on a few occasions where we thought that manufacturers, as soon as they could work out way to charge monthly subscriptions for things, would. Samsung apparently has.
Reports coming out of Korea are saying that Samsung is to start charging (and may have already) a monthly subscription for “AI” features and more. The scheme is said to be called “AI Subscription Club” for home appliances.
Lim Sung-taek, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Korea division, said, “The new subscription service has prioritised strengthening customer convenience and expanding options. We will continue to introduce various new benefits and services to maximise customer satisfaction throughout the entire subscription process of purchasing, installing, using, maintaining, and repairing products.”
Essentially, the service gives customers a bunch of information on their appliances and does some maintenance stuff, but there was no standout feature that we could see, which is one of those whizz-bang things we’d think people would have to have.
The thing is, this is here, now.
Whether this comes to the UK or even Europe is not known at this time, so there are also no costs, but whether European customers will buy into this or not, we dunno.
