    Hi Everyone

Just wondering, has anyone managed to seperate a Sealed Tub for a successful bearing job OR any “IDEAS on how you would go about it. ❓ ❓ ❓

I would not attempt it as it could go horribly wrong if, for example, the thing fell apart the first time they tried a high temperature wash. I did break up a Hotpoint tub to see what was inside. The bearings were 6205 and 6206 but the seal was different to that from the 30mm bearing kit and ran on a conventional bronze collar. If that collar was damaged you could not buy a replacement spider in any case.

So far as I am aware, it cannot and has not been done successfully.

We’ve seen a few people on here in the public forums try it.

One I think in the trade forums.

None have ever come back to tell us that we were all wrong and that it could be done. 😉

I wouldn’t even attempt it, as Phidom says, there’s too many things could go wrong and you’d be liable for any damage. Plus the limitations on spares as well as not having a clue what bearings and seal were being used till you opened it up.

Yep, i do love to beat the system where possible, but the sealed drum is the one thing theres no way round IMO. Perfect example of built in obsolescence.. the fella who thought of that one must have been given a big fat bonus to be sure :rolls:
Still live in hope that somehow the manufacturers will be forced to go back to fitting drums with replaceable bearings, but thats probably wishful thinking. All we need now is sealed motors with non replaceable brushes & the completely disposable washer will be well & truly here.. with some machines available for £150 you could argue they’re already here of course 😯

    It’s all about re-cycling in the end…..

Take a Lux-group clam shell tub, it’s held together by 18 quite substantial screws. Taken together, they weigh about 1/2 a kilo. Now consider that Lux make 5 million (?) washers per year. By removing the bolts, they eliminate 2,500 tonnes of metal from production, which doesn’t have to be recycled. On that basis, the big boys will accept the odd tub replacement as production efficient.

After all, re-cycling costs money :rolls: .

The targets for WEEE are based on weight of appliances/goods put into the market. Your WEEE Declaration states the number of appliances and the weight of each based on your sales.

So, the lighter you make them, the less that WEEE costs you.

It’s hardly rocket science to work out what’s gonna happen is it? 😉

ISE and others I’d guess, with heavier and better built machines get penalised even though they are designed to stay in use for longer. So effectively we pay more on “Green Tax” even though we’re more environmentally friendly.

Go figure, but that’s the law.

I can see a horrible scenario when the marketing bods wake up to it. Some budget manufacturer will be promoting their product as

“Having the lowest re-cycling footprint on the market”.

That’s GREEN, isn’t it? Despite the fact that the hapless customer will get through 4 or 5 of the accursed things before an ISE10 even comes out of its warranty.

Laughable, just laughable, although it really isn’t funny.

I don’t know how true it is and i certainly have not seen any evidence of it so i would take it only as a RUMOUR!! A freind of mine who works at the lux group said they was going back to making split drums with bolts again because of trouble they have had!!!
Has i have said only a rumour upto yet though 😥

Re: How to seperate sealled Drum

I looked at a WF541 the other day. It was just loose weights. It looked like the drum was clipped together in some way(?) but I only took a cursory look. I see the complete drum is available from connect at £69.55 = £80 incl vat. That’s not really tooo bad considering the work it saves. :duck:
Let’s say £120 all in and the customer’s sorted for a year or two, if the electronics hold out. OK, you’re giving them a fantastic deal considering the retail price of the part, but you keep the customer.

You’re going to fit a tub assembly for £40?

Times are hard. And it’s all good fun after all. Anyway, I thought you did everything for £47.50 plus parts at trade?
