ParticipantHi
We have an elderly 6100 which now has very noisy drum bearings. Is this a reasonably easy DIY repair (I am a well-qualified engineer) or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new machine? (I replaced the motor brushes just a couple of weeks ago and the rest of the machine is good, despite it being 15+ years old)
Would the bearings be available at my local bearing supplier or are they ‘specials’?
Anyone got a step-by-step guide, please?
Many thanks for any help.

Bearing amnd seal set HERE.
Possibly the easiest bearing change ever – motor and pulley off, three bolts for the bearing housing to undo and it all pulls out backwards. Then out with the big hammer and drift.

My grateful thanks to Mr Penguin for a speedy, concise reply. I will be going forth tomorrow with my Birmingham screwdriver! 🙂

OK – motor off, all bolts out, but the three-legged ‘spider’ will not draw off the drum shaft.
Does it just need more violence, or is there summat I’m missing?
Should I be doing this with the machine upright, or should I lay it on its face so the shaft is upright? What will support the inner drum once I get the ‘spider’ off?

Ha! Done it – more violence was all that was needed. 🙂
Bearings popped out nice ‘n easy, too.

Well done. Bit of a physical job, but very satisfying.

Righty-o! Back again!
All back together with new bearings and seals but the drum goes tight when I tighten the pulley centre-bolt. It’s almost as if it’s now rubbing on a build-up of calcium (of which there was quite a bit around the front of the seal).
How can it now be in a different (relative) position? Does not compute?? The spider is non-adjustable (isn’t it?), so the confounded thing MUST be in the same place as it was, but it rubs from (apparently) somewhere in between the inner and outer drum.
WTF?? Any ideas, good people?

Hi.
What condition was the drum shaft in?

Shaft was good. I dressed it with some 240 wet&dry, then 1200 to polish the seal surface, then put a bit of grease on all surfaces before assembly. I’m fairly sure that the inner bearing is down onto its shoulder and not binding, so the drum must be in the same position as it was.
Puzzled? Moi?

One of your bearings isn’t fully driven home.
