Just found out I cannot restock on 1603071 Armatures as they have suddenly gone OBSOLETE??????….What’s going on with Merloni on this?
Is there a pattern equivalent I wonder to bail us out here?

It looks like the 1603071 is definitely obsolete, the 1603070 (same less brushes) may still be available. I have emailed Merloni asking them.
I’ll get back with info when I have it.

The following armatures are now obsolete. (Although there are a few still in stock at a number of distributors across the UK so if you want some I suggest you act quickly!).

1603071GDA (Now Merloni) no longer manufacture it’s own motors and therefore no armatures. (The 1601978 motor will soon be obsolete).
The only armature readily available is the 161498B.

In some ways as Ken said this could actually be beneficial as it will kill off the dodgy guys who fit new armatures and charge customers for new motors, also when the 1601978 motors run out, every motor replacement will be an FHP conversion, which will mean wiring modifications. Customers and cowboys alike will probably shy away from this, which will mean more work for us, my only reservation is whether the customers will be willing to pick up the £100 + price tag for a fitted motor.

Brush’s are still available.
The FHP motor price has now been dropped. Not sure what distributors will sell at net….probably around the £45.00 ex. Vat.

The equivelent FHP motor if anyone needs to know to replace the 1601978 (small digital tacho) is part number 1604822, this should fit virtually all the WM range I believe.

Let’s hope then for all our sakes that the ‘pattern boys’ will increase production of armatures to include a 1603071 equivalent?
I would not class myself as a cowboy for wanting to fit an armature and new brushes to an otherwise perfectly good motor! The cost is less than half that of a complete motor replacement and therefore more acceptable to the customer. Start quoting £100 plus to replace the motor and you loose the job and those customers won’t buy another Merloni that’s is for certain sure!
We weren’t cowboys years back when Hoover motors were stripped down and repaired by everyone, the Hotpoint Creda Motor is certainly no exception and I think it is a travesty that Merloni have taken this line and are prepaired to take the subsequent loss in excess of 6 figure sums.
All part of a master plan to put us all out of business and possibly even the cowboys!

I don’t believe any infered you were Martin, it’s just we all know that the unscrupulous out there will take a customer’s motor away and refit it a day later charging for a new motor having only repolaced the armature. I am of the same opinion as you, we carry the armaure and loads of brushes on the vans, and only charge for an armature and brushes, or just brushes, plus our normal labour charge.
There will, no doubt be some loss of work due to the difference in motor replacement price as opposed to an armature and/or brushes, but it may also increase as the DIY-ers will not tackle motor conversions.
We’ll have to wait and see I suppose.

Is that the motor where it has a flat grey filter/suppressor attached to it where you need to put a “Rast” 7 way Motor Plug Connector on it to convert?

1604820 FHP Motor Fits Digital 800 Spin.
1604822 FHP Motor Fits Digital 1000 & 1200 Spin.
These replace the 1601400 (800rpm) and 1601978 (1000/1200rmp).
Each comes with a complete conversion kit. (Screws / Instructions etc).
There is a patten armature on the market, whether it burns out after a week or so I don’t know. I don’t think manufacturing a good armature replacement is as easy as tooling up for a rubber door gasket !!!

Martin I was not insinuating that anyone was a cowboy, but when I do and have heard of such people they are usually fitting dodgy pattern parts and charging too much as well as the tricks that Dave mentioned. We will never get rid of such people sadly as there’s always some punters out there that think that there is such a thing as a free lunch.
The demise of certain spares are inevitable but it’s normally when the volume falls below a certain threshhold or the age dictates that it’s time to drop them. However, IME, customers are getting increasingly concerned with the price of electronic components and, as is the case here, the fact that certain spares are not available and that the only option is a “full unit”. That may be cheaper for the manufacturer to have produced, it may be cheaper to stock and it may even be cheaper to ship but at what cost to repeat sales of their appliances?

This had better be right – I’ve just gone and bought a load and Mrs P is not a happy pengy.
I don’t know about passing motors off as new with an armature; but we had two outfits up here who used to fit “recon motors”. This was of course the old scam of fitting the one in the van with the new carbon sticks in, and taking the old one away. And fitting new cabon sticks ready for the next “customer”. Or should that be “mark”?
Anyway, my biggest brush user these days is the CESET motor, not Hotpoint; which must be a rather sad state of affairs. Nice earner though!

Had one of those late night thoughts. I was told by a Hpt engineer some years back that a 161747 armature will run in place of a 1603071 by swapping the tacho magnet over; but, you can’t do it the other way round. Anyone know about this? If it’s correct, we should hunt down 161747’s and 161747B’s as well as 1603071’s!
