ParticipantAnother tricky one on a Zanussi Washing Machine.
Program and start the machine on a wash cycle and the machine starts without any problems.
Machine fills + drum turns + heats water with no problems. Machine works away without problems then, just before it’s about to enter the rinse cycle, it throws a fault – the ‘start / stop’ and the ‘washing light’ start flashing and the machine stops.
Customer has stated that if she simply moves the cycle onto the rinse part of the program then the machine completes the rest of the cycle without any problems.
The machine has stopped at the same place / time of several occasions.
I’ve examined pretty much all components and wiring and all looks in good order. Also checked motor brushes and tacho and all is fine.
Ideas?

Those flashing lights constitute an ‘error code’ that is telling you what’s wrong. Count the number of flashes the ‘end of cycle’ LED gives as the first number (digit) of your code and then count the flashes of the ‘start/pause’ LED gives as the second number (digit) the two digits (i.e 23) are that vital code (23 = drain probs)….OK? 😉

ParticipantThanks Martin. I have a number of PDF’s which cover Zanussi machines but not one for this machine. Is there a PDF available for this machine which contains these error codes?

I think the codes apply to all machines. They don’t change from model to model. Mediator on CDSL site will show them or consult error codes thread/book.

ParticipantOkay, been to have another quick look at the machine. I got the customer to stick the machine on pre visit so it would be glitching when I got there.
The fault isnt quite as originally stated! The program does not flash a fault code. Instead it just seems to be stalling. It sits there doing nothing for 10 to 15 mins at a time and then will suddenly spin the drum (slightly quicker than wash speed) and then back to nothing for another 10 mins or so. All the while the ‘washing’ light and the ‘start / stop’ remain fully lit.
My guess is control board? These are £130 a shot retail.

Oooooh please don’t guess but take a close look at the motor brushes and tacho magnet and don’t forget to check the heater too! 😀
Module = Last resort every time….. 😉

ParticipantMotor brushes checked on first visit along with tacho coil + magnet. Machine seems very ‘low mileage’ for that kind of fault (brushes are still at around 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of a new set).

That sounds like the kind of fault that you’re only going to have any chance of finding by going through machine with a fine toothed comb. Or swapping parts one by one until the machine starts working correctly again. And like as not you may end up not finding the fault or laying out lots of dosh in a futile attempt. I’d do all the cheap and quick stuff and if that doesn’t work pass them on to the manufacturer’s agents. I’d start by meggering motor and heater, which you’ve probs already done. Then do as much disconnecting and reconnecting of all terminals as is feasible, and tugging to check for broken wires. Possibly pull out board to look for dry joints. Or give up now and save yourself from baldness. (Cause you won’t know if it’s cured until the customer’s tested it again.) And you will be unlikely to ever come across the same fault ever again so it won’t even have been a valuable learning experience.
One other possible would be to try entering the “diagnostics”. Though it might not lead to much.

sounds like a loose motor tacho magnet to me……..the diagonstics on these models are good, i would read the fault code!

Perhaps drain hose is pushed too far down & is syphoning when trying to fill on rinse

ParticipantThere is no fault code. The program just sits there for long periods doing nothing once the wash water has been correctly heated. It does that on any wash cycle which has been selected. As soon as you (manually) switch it to rinse it goes through and completes without any further problems. This tells me that the program is glitching at only one point. If the fault was motor related then surely it would be more random and the fault would occur at various points?

You told us first of all that the “start/stop and the ‘washing light’ start flashing” when the fault occured. Has it stopped doing that now Steve?
