ParticipantHi, first post so be gentle.
My Samsung American-style freezer started defrosting although the temperature indicators showed normal operating temps.
After turning it off & back on the temperature indicators showed the actual[warm] temperatures.
This also seems to have kicked it back to life.
Current status is that the refrigerator won’t cool and hovers around 10-15c. The freezer seems to be ok for a few hours then starts to defrost.
Currently have it on a timer that reboots it every 1.5 hours.Had a Samsung approved engineer round. £85 to tell me it’s got a fault. Has suggested replacing the compressor as there are no faults being reported by the display. If I had a technical manual i could have probably worked that out myself.
[If anyone needs a technical manual i now have one – tells you how to read the diagnostics/force defrost/adjust temp settings etc. contact me]
So some Q’s:
– The unit is 8 years old – am I flogging a dead horse? A new compressor will be c. £200 plus fitting. Is it worth doing?
– Given the display is not reporting any faults is replacing the compressor going to work?
– Is there anything I can try or replace that might sort the problem – and not cost an am and a leg?Any suggestions/comments/advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi RATM..
Sound like you have a similar problem to me… SRS2028CVW, abt 8 years old – not showing any fault codes. Starts OK from cold but doesn’t restart cooling cycle automatically. Only diff seems to be mine reaches temp but then warms up.
Lots of previous posts about thermo fuses and defrost heaters seemed to have cured similar problems elsewhere…
Where did you get the manual – I could do with a copy, if possible…

Participantthats a faulty defrost heater

helo_75 – thanks.
Are these symptoms what you would expect with this fault?Presumably this is the one you mean
DA96-00013B – Samsung Fridge Freezer Evaporator & Defrost HeaterIs it something easily replaceable?
Or if not would a fridge technician be able to do it if I supplied the part?May 3, 2010 at 9:39 am #319244helo_75
Participantits a tricky job
the heater will unclip from the evaporator and refit onto your existing evaporator
the sensors need to to be changed tooif the evaporator is to be changed, then its a specialist job.. requiring system work and a regas
personally, id pay someone to do it as its sharp in there, and its easy to crack pipe work!

Participantoh, and yes.. the sensor will turn off the appliance untill it defrosts… and if the heater is faulty, that could be 24-36 hrs.. and when u unplug / plug it back in .. it starts the whole cycle again
quite common
if its under 5 years old, samsung will do that repair f.o.c

the heater is available on its own now, you dont need to buy the evaporator to get just the heater . that is assuming your heater has failed .

Thanks for the feedback.
Looking at the exploded schematic, is the defrost heater the thing that clips onto the bottom of the evaporator assembly?
As for changing the sensors the schematic has a defrost sensor DA32 10109N and a freezer sensor DA32 10105H do you mean these?
What about the thermal fuse DA47 10148J?Chezza – where can I get a heater on its own?

Replaced the thermal fuse and defrost sensor – fun way to spend friday evening!
Turned it back on and it appears to be holding the required temperature but will monitor over the next few days as the defrost heater may need replacing too.Defrost heater: the one on the evaporator looks quite different to the one you can buy in [e.g.]partmaster. They look like foil heaters – does anyone know if they are easy to fit & whether the old heater is difficult to get off?
If anyone is in a similar position I can categorically say that replacing the sensors is not that difficult. If you are handy with a screwdriver & like taking things apart it’s a doddle. Just wish I’d read UKWhitegoods before I spent £85 on a useless Samsung-approved engineer who couldn’t suggest anything other than replacing the compressor. You would have thought they would be up to speed on common problems?
Here’s how:
1. turn the fridge off. Empty it & take out the shelves.
2. take the white screw out of the top of the light strip. pull the strip off – it’s held in place with tabs so I stuck a blunt knife down the tab to un locate them. may have to give it a good pull.
3. take off the temperature sensor outer ring by twisting it to the left. unscrew the purple cover. pull out the plugs behind it.
Take out the 3 screws holding the lighting board in place – pull it out.you now have the evaporator cover in front of you, the top has two holes in it and there may be some polystyrene visible.
4. if you have a cooler element – like a plastic radiator on the bottom of the evaporator, take the two screws out & lay it on the floor of the fridge out of the way.
5. There are 4 screws holding the evaporator cover on, the top two are behind some pop off covers. the bottom ones are at ground level.
Take the screws out.
I found pulling the evaporator cover off quite tricky as it’s difficult to gauge how hard to pull. You may have an ice monster behind the cover so it could be stuck on. I accidentally ripped a bit of the cover off[it’s polystyrene behind the plastic front] as it was frozen onto the back of the fridge. If you pull from the top & wait, pull a bit more & wait, any bits stuck on will have a chance to unstick if they thaw a bit.6. This reveals the bits we’re after. Mine was well iced up so I [carefully] scraped off as much as I could and then got a hairdryer on it. It did the trick & took 10 mins or so to clear of ice. You can pull the evaporator forward to get ice off the back as it’s held in place on two plastic clips.
7. The thermal fuse is behind the evaporator bottom left, top plug. the defrost sensor is in a white clip on the incoming evaporator pipe, top left, bottom plug.
I cut off all the cable ties. It’s straightforward to un plug and replace both sensors. The only cable tie I replaced was to hold the thermal fuse behind the evaporator away from the defrost heater. You can pull the evaporator away a little to make this easier.8. Job done. I gave it a good wipe down & put it back together.
Took me just over an hour.
The parts I used came with useful instructions and cost just over £20.
If I have to replace the heater this is going to set me back about another £20.May 9, 2010 at 6:08 pm #319251rageagainsthemachine

KeymasterRe: Samsung SR-S2028CSS on the blink
Hi rage..
Sorry to say but if the part that you have ordered is that of the link you posted….that is NOT the defrost heater.
This will NOT cure the problem you have,If you read through the previous posts that jhave been made concerning the rs20 or rs21 then you will find the correct parts required.
