ParticipantThis happened to the luckless owner of an Indesit Washing Machine in Hatfield earlier this month. Have you had a similar experience with a washing machine? Do let us know…………………

You are using the word EXPLODE I think incorrectly in this case as EXPLODE would mean some sort of combustable matirial had done just that, so I would say it has disintegrated and nothing more.

It kind of reminds me of when I read about the disintegrating Candy/Hoovers:

This has happened to us today!!! Just found this post about it when googling for other occurances! It’s virtually the same as this person from Hatfield as far as i can tell. We bought the machine in 2007 and it’s hardly had what you could call heavy use as it’s been just me and the mrs up until the birth of baby in october last year.
I’m going to get in touch with Indesit in the morning!James

Thank you James,
Can I ask that you take some pictures of the offending machine and post them for us to see or send them with a description of what happened and machine make/model to admin@ukwhitegoods.co.uk.
We would also be interested in hearing what Indesit have to say about the matter.

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OBwIGh3ULrZefu7js8wQnA?feat=directlinkThe machine is an Indesit WIXL163, purchased i think around October 2007 from Boots Kitchen Appliances.
Have no idea what the actual flow of the damage was, but everything internally in the machine is destroyed, the drum is split open, and the clothes that you can see in the drum in the picture are stuck in there. I have retrieved several pieces of tattered cloth indicating the clothes are ruined. There are dents which can be seen on the outside of the casing, and some minor damage has occured to kitchen units surrounding the washing machine.
My wife and baby were at home at the time, in other rooms. My wife described the noise as sounding as though a bomb had gone off in the kitchen, and the electrics in the house were tripped.
Regards

I think that Martins use of the word EXPLODE is grammatically and technically correct in every way Bill. 😉
verb (used without object)
1. to expand with force and noise because of rapid chemical change or decomposition, as gunpowder or nitroglycerine ( opposed to implode).
2. to burst, fly into pieces, or break up violently with a loud report, as a boiler from excessive pressure of steam.
3. to burst forth violently or emotionally, especially with noise, laughter, violent speech, etc.: He exploded with rage when contradicted.
4. Phonetics . (of plosives) to terminate the occlusive phase with a plosion. Compare implode ( def. 2 ) .
5. Golf . to play an explosion shot on a golf ball.Jim. ( not quite retired yet)

Thank god no one was hurt!
Have there been any injuries reported with these machines, or have the ‘explosions’ stayed within the machines?

The worrying thing is that this machine is four years old, it is not one of the Polish made machines that the recent internal ‘red alert’ referred to.
Granted a very large proprtion of these low quality machines will have already been scrapped, that still means that there are potentially many thousands of these machines still in use that could end up like this one at any time. :rolls:

Looking closely at the photo’s I would say the cause was due to one of the detachable drum paddles coming adrift at some stage during the wash cycle. This left a large gap between the inner and outer drum into which the clothes slid, most likely whilst spinning at maximum (1600rpm) speed!
In the Hoover/Candy machines there was a design fault with the inner drum seam giving way. This does not appear to be the case in this example as the seam looks intact. A classic case of drum paddle failure IMHO.

Thought Hotpoint ? Indesit were supposed to be appliance manufacturers. Maybe they should give up on appliances & go into the demolition game instead, they certainly seem to be better at that. Just glad the O/Ps wife & baby were’nt hurt, Just wonder how long before someone is seriously injured?.
