ParticipantObviously the correct uf rated capacitor should be used when replacing but I was always under the impression, wrongly or rightly, that as a rule of thumb 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} either way was acceptable.
I just replaced a 10uf with the nearest I had on the van, a 12.5uf, in a LG condenser tumble dryer.
Anyone have any comments?October 28, 2010 at 10:46 am #334346gandh1

following your rule of thumb, 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of 10 is 1, = 11…
used 8uf instead of 7.5’s but wouldnt wanna go much further outside those parameters… never tried it and my electronic knowledge is thin at best – just assumed too much of a boost will fry certains parts

the capacitors themselves have a tolerence value, normally +/- 5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}
taking this into account, your 12.5 uf cap could be just under 12 or just over 13, whereas your 10 could be 10.5.
i wouldn’t have thought you were far out with what you’ve done.October 28, 2010 at 3:24 pm #334348bigkid

Thanks all, the original was +7 -3 the replacement was +or- 5.
Ordered a 10 anyway as the 12.5 was only a stopgap.October 28, 2010 at 8:17 pm #334349leavemetogetonwithit

Years ago somebody, think it was Iadom, posted on here that as long as it was bigger it would be fine. I have since (temporarily) used a 7 in place of a 5 (Zan dw) without any apparent issue. Now regularly replace 4’s with 5’s when cheap 4’s out of stock and 7.5’s with 8’s which are usually cheaper.

Did a quick search. Subject has certainly been much discussed in the past.
See capacitor values
