I am trying to remove the inner bearing on a Hotpoint WMA63 washing machine. The rear bearing knocked out with no problem as did the front seal but the inner bearing had already disintegrated and only the outer casing was left.. Is it possible to remove this without specialist tools?

It should come out with a good wallop, make sure whatever you are using has a good edge on it to make good contact with the outer bearing shell.

I have tried giving it a bl@#dy good wallop with a big hammer and large screwdriver but its only budged about a milimeter. There doesn’t seem to be that much of an edge to hit. As the bearing only has the outer case left it is almost flush with the steel insert. (which I guess stays in place?)

You will need a long 8mm drill to drill 2 grooves (5mm deep) in front of the bearing into the aluminium collar support. Then use a cold chisel to drift the bearing out of its ‘blind hole!’

    Easy 😆

Yes these are stubborn little so and so’s. Do as Martin says get a flat edged chisel and a lot of patience. You say you moved it a mm. Pesevere and it will come out. Just make sure you get a good hold on the bearing case with the chisel or a long thick screwdriver……………Good luck. Remember patience not frustration and you will conquer this.

Drilling 2 grooves in behind the bearing and a big hammer sorted it..

    Cheers for the suggestions..

    a little help on drifts
an engine valve stem is a handy tool for drifting out items where a small lip is available as on a stubourne outer case of a bearing.
also an engine push rod, if ground down to suit job (do not over heat)
but a good mechanic always uses a brass drift
