Is it just me or is it a really quiet time? I’ve been self-employed in this area for over 20 years and last week was my worst week ever on earnings; this week is not looking much better either!

I will be giving it up as a bad job in the next few months as I don’t see much of a future for this trade. 🙁

Sorry to hear that Phidom. Been doing it long and how big is your company?

Same story down here in the extreme south west. Not that I’m all that bothered. More to life than working.

Steady as she goes here, but then everyone will have had the Christmas credit card bill, the biggest gas and leccy bills of the year etc, hang on in there chaps. 🙂

VAT increase, media scares, bad weather, inflation…

Loads of things on top of the usual Christmas credit card bills and the whopping gas and electricity bills to scare the bejesus out of people.

But, in the repair game, recession is good for business.

    Sad, but true.

don’t know if there’s any correlation but i notice those who are quite don’t have a website listed.

I get average 2 good quality jobs (per day) from websites as very often customers who find us from them are professionals, no messing about with penny pinching etc. just want the job doing asap.

Have also been contacted and now used regularly by dozens of landlords and letting agents from around the country with properties in my area through web site.

Sorry I know not strictly on topic but I just thinking, cause and effect etc.

    Re: Busy or what??

Good tip, Neil. Had the domain name registered for about three years and done nothing about it. Perhaps I’d better get on with it.
One question though. What is the size of the population of the complete area that you cover? (Then I can divide that by the population I cover and get myself a ball park figure for how many extra jobs I might expect if I make my website as good as yours!)
Edit: Doh, stupid question! All the info’s on your website! 😳

Mike, don’t forget that Neil is near me and has a large congregation.. but … he also has a lot of competition. You however, have relatively less competition and therefore may gain considerably more work from the website you create…

    Re: Busy or what??

Good point, George. There are also other factors to consider such as demographics and internet usage. Still, I was only looking to get a vague idea. The only way to find out for sure is to bite the bullet.
I already get a few customers from the internet via various free directories so it will be worth me setting up a page of info just to test the water.

    Re: Busy or what??

All the websites, neon signs above the shop and full page ads in YP will have little effect right here right now. Dragging them in off the street won’t help either. The reason that work right now is very steady or slow or even dead is as previously stated by other postees before me.

If you can scrape through this rough patch, pay your half-yearly to HMRC and still have some loose cash left in the shop till, then you will make it through into February and not be fearful on the bailiffs knocking any time soon.

Meanwhile you’ll be innudated with time wasters, dreamers, schemers and cold callers as they seem to crawl straight out of the woodwork during times like these thats for darn sure…..testing your resolve all the while….hang on in there guys, we’re all paddling in the same canoe after all. 😉

    Re: Busy or what??

Different situation for me,starting to get regular bookings from the Spanish.
The spanish technicos charge 100euros before they get out of their vans, and never keep an appointment.
Just fitted a door seal to a spanish machine, the old guy told me he had been waiting for the technico for 2 weeks.
