ParticipantHi,
got one of these that is pouring water out of the motor seal.
Have I got to change just the motor with the seal kit, a complete unit, or do I need the sealing kit as well?
Can this be fitted without removing the tank or has it all to come off (never done this before on a Bosch)?
Thanks

Tank off. Instructions are available here somewhere in one of Martin’s best efforts. (Suggest search for Bosch + heater + dishwasher and specify author Martin, tick display results as posts.) Should be just a sealing kit unless shaft / bearing have got damaged. Watch out it’s not a leaking hose from mtr to htr which is only available as complete htr …. probably.

Thanks Mike,
The motor is covered in the usual salts and scum and is noisy so a motor required and I knew about Martins post but never had the need to dismantle a Bosch as yet.

You could replace the motor bearing rather than the whole motor – Here is how I did it on the last one that I did:-
Unscrew Impeller, Remove the 2 torx head screws from the motor and then remove the rear end frame, you now need to remove the armature (may need some gentle persuasion from a hammer).
To remove the bearing from the shaft the easiest way that I have found is to use the claws of 2 claw hammers (one hammer each side of the bearing) and lever it off, you can now replace it with one of these.Works out much cheaper than a new motor even if it does take 10 minutes longer.

Mike,
Bosch seem to list only the motor complete with the face(ceramic??) included 489658.
Or is the sealing kit, 183638 the above less the motor? I can’t make it out on the Bosch site.
Jem, if this works out it looks like a good fix and I will do that for sure.

Forgot to say in my instructions above – don’t try to remove the stator coil before removing the armature because of the way that it is wound the armature will only come out of the back.

For most motor repairs that kit (183638) is all you will need Rob. If the ballrace bearing (608ZZ) directly behind the pump impellor kit is the least bit dodgy through water ingress then best change that whilst you’re at it, otherwise a squirt of 3in1 will suffice. 🙂
It may also be a good idea to use a marker pen on the pump chamber and motor frame before you take it to bits…aids putting it back together you’ll find. 💡

I really thought it would be the complete motor and too expensive but will go for the kit and bearing now so thanks in order of appearance to…………….

Well, I took the thing apart, renewed the seal kit and put it back together and now water pours out of the seal that the impeller housing fits into. It is very loose so it might have been that all along 😳 But why would it get so bad? Vibration of the motor?
Ordered and on its way.
The first time I’ve taken one of these apart and thanks again to Martin for the instructions. Not as scary as I thought.

They’re usually a pretty good tight seal as a rule and I don’t get much call to change them TBH. Detergent corrosion in this case maybe? (You’ll need a smear of washing-up liquid on the new seal to ensure a good fit by the way.)

This has as much room around it as a train in a tunnel.

I’d say you had to leaks in the first place Rob.
Motor seal [sealing kit] probably leaking for ages. Seal from motor casing into sump would be what your saw when you tested it.Can be changed without taking tank off, 10min job once you have done a few. they usually go rotten/ slimy . But there again i would not tank the tank off to change a motor. each to their own!

If the motor was noisy then you almost certainly had a leak through the impellor seal. So, as Pinky said, two leaks.
Don’t listen to him about not taking the tank off. Look at his avatar; he’s obviously a contortionist 😆 .

Yes Mike, being an expert now having done my first one 😛 I can see no way to change the motor or seal on this without the tank off on this model.
I think PINKY is having a giraffe unless he can tell me how.
Come on PINKY explain 😆
