CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) – Electrolux plans to build a refrigerator factory in Ciudad Juarez, employing some 3,000 people.
The announcement Tuesday was welcome news for the industrial border city, which has lost thousands of jobs to cheaper wages in Asia and the global economic downturn. Electrolux, based in Sweden, had previously announced it planned to close its refrigerator manufacturing plant in Greenville, Michigan, next year and move the factory to Mexico.
The Ciudad Juarez facility will be the first Electrolux plant in Mexico.
Ciudad Juarez was chosen over several other towns in Mexico. The city is home to many of the border’s assembly-for-export plants.
Gov. Patricio Martinez said the company will invest $100 million US to construct the first phase of the plant.
