Sore point and one the manufacturer often plays. The machine has, in effect, been tampered with and therefore compromised against their warranty terms. 😥

hi loopey,
check the customers instruction book if in there it tells you how to replace the plugtop with the wiring instructions then send her back to the manufacurer, if not its as Martin said.

Was the loose fuse holder you mentioned in the plug? Or an internal fuse in the microwave? Probably wouldn’t change anything legally but would give customer a bit of ammunition for a moan if it was latter.

Then the customer has a perfect right to kick up a little bit of fuss; e.g. phone Sharp and give them a piece of her mind. And, if she gets no redress, to spread the word around as widely as she wishes via review sites etc. (I have assumed it to be a female.)

Just contact TS .. Removal of a plug does not invalidate a warrantee unless the replacement plug is not of a sufficien standard to cover UK law. Notwithstanding this, The customer has paid you for your services and therefore you could identify the fault on the receipt. The item was faulty from the sales point and therefore the repair or a replacement should be forthcoming.

this is where it all gets so totally unfair, and impractical. because it was bought from an indie down south, shes gotta travel down there to get the recompense, unless the retailer takes it up with sharp on her behalf. sharp are unlikely to deal with you, only the distributor, retailer and customer.
plus, they will argue they were not given sufficient access to fix it due to the fact their engineer was subcontracted for the work and therefore not their fault. put simply after the sharp guy refused to look at it she should have got onto sharp c/s and quoted t/s statement that cutting a plug off did not consitute a breach of guarantee.
however in sharps defence, if it states in the guarantee book that “any modification voids guarantee” shes not gonna get her moneysworth in court…

Warranty terms from Sharp’s website:
“5. This limited warranty shall not apply in respect of the following:”
“ii. defects caused by the Product being subjected to any of the following: …unauthorised modifications or connections, unauthorised opening or repair, use of unauthorised spare parts,…”
So unless the defect was caused by the unauthorised modification, Sharp are bound to honour the warranty.

Looking also on their web site and downloading a User Instruction Book then the point raised earlier by BobHope is all too apparent. Check out THIS PDF and read Page 5 and then Page 40. 😉

Here is the piece as Martin has just stated, on Page 5:
Sharp wrote:When replacing the plug please ensure that
you use a BSI or ASTA approved plug to
BS1363, this should be fitted with a brown
coloured 13 amp fuse approved by BSI or
ASTA to BS1362. If you have any doubt
about electrical connection seek the help of a
qualified electrician.George
