(Firstly — thanks again for this fantastic resource, I’ve used it on many occasions, and it’s great!)We’ve just been given an Asko w660 washing machine that was in use in the house before we moved in. When we tried it for the first time, the LCD panel apparently came on briefly, but then went completely blank, and the machine is now dead (apart from the power on light, which indicates that the user-replaceable fuse on the back is OK). The door catch also seemed to be faulty, so I (power off!) opened the machine up to see whether there was any obvious damage on any of the PCBs or wiring, and to check the door catch. Although it’s an old machine, it seems to be in great condition, and nice to work on. There was no obvious sign of any damage to the main control board, the LCD panel PCB, or the motor control board, and I opened the door switch up and it all looks good. (Mechanical closing mechanism with an electric release to open).
Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing the problem please? I’m guessing that it’s probably the power to the main control board, as the machine is so dead?Thanks!

Check the mains filter and power switch is okay, they would be the first things to check.

OK, thanks. (Sorry, should have read the section of the website about diagnosis first; hadn’t seen that before.)
The mains filter looks fine, no visible damage. Can I test it with a conventional multimeter? (I’m guessing it’s basically a capacitor, and I can’t really test it).

There’s not really a way of testing mains filters unless you know what you’re about with them in all honesty. Often though, when they fail, there is visible signs that they have.
I’ve attached the schematic wiring diagram for the series but I don’t know how well it will relate to your particular model as, it is so old that there’s little documentation available for it now. That would usually mean that it was over twenty years since production ceased at least.
Notably there are also no spare parts listed for the model so we’re sorta flying blind here.

Great, thanks! I called the local agents, and they reckon that it’s between 10 and 12 years old, maybe it was never released in the UK?
That diagram looks correct, there was a copy tucked inside the machine when I opened it! The connections on the mains filter are numbered according to the diagram, live to 1, neutral to 2. There’s also a diagram on the side of the filter which indicates that 1 connects to 3 and 2 to 4 internally. (Plus a whole lot of other info about the part).Re: ASKO w660, no display on LCD panel
Can I bypass the filter to check whether that’s the problem? Some more info from the filter:

Oh, OK. I was under the impression that it was just a suppressor, so although shouldn’t be permanently bypassed, it would be fine for testing. I’ve already drained it and removed it, so no danger there anymore.

If you want to then you should be able to work out how from the wiring diagram.
However, you are then giving the electronics unfiltered mains voltage, any spikes or irregularities could damage them.
Consider yourself warned. 😉

OK, you’ve convinced me! 😀 I’m starting to doubt that it’s the mains filter anyway. Dunno what else it could possibly be. Presuming there’s some component on the main board that provides 13V for the digital display, if that fails, would the whole machine seem so dead?

In all honesty, I don’t know as we usually don’t go down to board component level.
