The advice you got from the salesman is completely wrong and, if anything, would probably choke the unit internally.
That trick worked on old ammonia units donkey’s years ago maybe, but not on any normal refrigeration, ever.
The point of most refrigeration units is, you don’t switch it off for extended periods. 😉
I would think that the compressor is kaput by the sounds of it but, as the system has now been filled with oil now from the compressor the unit is scrap I would think.
If your annex is unheated it’s also not a suitable area for modern refrigeration just in case you replace it and get problems.
