We have a Hotpoint R5303B fridge that is about 7 years old. It is in an annexe and is turned off when not in use. It has now been turned on after a spell of 2 or 3 months and the light works when the door is opened but there is no sound of a compressor / motor or any cooling effect. I have tried turning the fridge upside down to agitate the gas / coolant (suggested by an ex white goods salesman) but the situation remains the same. What can the problem be?

    Okay then…

The advice you got from the salesman is completely wrong and, if anything, would probably choke the unit internally.

That trick worked on old ammonia units donkey’s years ago maybe, but not on any normal refrigeration, ever.

The point of most refrigeration units is, you don’t switch it off for extended periods. 😉

I would think that the compressor is kaput by the sounds of it but, as the system has now been filled with oil now from the compressor the unit is scrap I would think.

If your annex is unheated it’s also not a suitable area for modern refrigeration just in case you replace it and get problems.

Thank you for your prompt reply, we live and learn! I will replace it, leave it on permanently and yes the heating is left on (low) all the time. Grateful for your help and advice.

    Regards.

Frigidaire by any chance? As your model number is not of Hotpoint extraction.
