There is a TV Programme called “Tonight” scheduled at 7.30 – 8.00pm on ITV this evening.
You should, if you have the opportunity, to either watch or record this programme, as it centres around:
“the potentially lethal domestic appliances in people’s home, and asks whether there are failings in the Nation’s Recall System”
should be interesting

Bloody annoying when they suggested a scheme to involve electricians, plumbers, ‘odd job men’ but no mention of domestic appliance engineers. 🙁

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HDClueless is the word here ! We have a nation of skilled Independent Appliance Engineers and lets face it Odd Job Men, Plumbers and most sparky’s would not have a clue whats what !
The content of the program was nothing any of us did’nt know as we see it on a almost daily basis, the manufacturers driven by the controlling sheds have been busy for evermore making cheap appliances with cheap components that barely are up to the job, Bit 100 boards, bad electrical connections , poorly designed appliances, its a minefield for the knowledgable let alone a contingent of workers as mentioned !

I have always tried to check appliances I’m working on and also have a quick scan for any that might be on a recall list. I advise customers if they might be recalled. If it’s a letting agency job I check and inform the agency if it’s a recalled product.
However, from my experience a good many customers just aren’t bothered generally. My most recent case of appathy: I did some work at house where the Lady works at a letting agency who I do work for. I noted the Glen Dimplex/Beko Cooker. I emailed her the website link with the phone number as well. Move forward 6 weeks later and I’m in the office today and I asked her how she got on with GD. “Oh I lost your email and haven’t really got around to it.” Absolutely not bothered. I do hope she saw the programe tongight.
GD were painted in a very good light on the show.

This week I turned up to a call on a cooker, whilst I was their she mentioned she keeps getting letters from hotpoint about her dishwasher,I had a look and its a fdw20, she said they are trying to sell her insurance, after I mentioned their had been a recall she admitted she never bothered reading the 3 she had just saw hotpoint at the top and binned it. after I mentioned their is quite a big thing going on rite now she popped off to the garage managed to get the latest one back from the bins whilst and sure enough its a recall notice.
Unbelievable.

Which is why we should have a recognised qualification and regulated.
If we dont make our industry credable, who will.
Until then we will not be given any credability, lets face it, when the likes of e-spares are allowed to post videos on how to repair appliances, clients, the media etc will ask how difficult is it……….
Maybe we should get together and post on You Tube videos of cock ups made by DIYers and damage they have caused.

If you can get anyone to care…
That will be £2000 for the course and qualification, it’ll take a week so add that cost.
Then it will be £1000 per year to maintain, five year renewal cycle. Costs more because there’s less of us than there are plumbers, gas fitters, electricians etc.
The high cost will increase warranty rates sure, but it will make repairs to all but the very high end product uneconomical therefore producing still more waste. Of course due to the low volumes there will be higher costs to repair and less people doing it. So less will get done.
Give it a few years and there would be no repairers at all.

If you are and you’re so convinced you’re correct, knock yourself out trying to find the government department that would deal with such requests then try to convince them that you are right and that they should splash out countless thousands on the barmy notion.
Meanwhile, I will not support and probably never will support such an idea as I think it’s suicidal and there isn’t a shred of evidence that convinces me otherwise. People ranting about it is NOT evidence by the way.
