ParticipantCustomer had the above condenser dryer for just over a year when the belt broke.
The machine was just over a year old when the belt broke. The break shows indication of the belt slipping causing it to overheat before breaking.
The machine was checked for anything preventing the drum from turning or catching when rotating but nothing was found.
The belt was replaced and lasted about 9 months before failing again.
Having checked the machine, there is still no sign of anything binding or catching preventing the drum from rotating.
The machine gets fairly heavy usage.
Is there any know cause for this or is it just down to the quality of the machine and the amount of use it’s getting?September 13, 2013 at 6:00 pm #401114Andy jones

Where the bearings and drum felts replaced at the same time

No, but there was no apparent wear on the bearings, the rear bearing had no play and there was no build up of fluff inside the machine associated with the felts having worn.

I would replace them along with the belt just to eliminate that being the problem, personally I always replace them as a matter of course

Do you suggest the front and rear bearings and felts?

I would mate. Especially the rear felt and make sure the washer goes on the drum spindle before reassembling. Easy for them to drop off. Also check the pulley for ant signs of wear

When Replaced the last time the pulley was checked but I will take another look and replace the felts and bearings.
I wish people would listen when I tell them don’t by a Merloni machine!September 13, 2013 at 7:43 pm #401120Andy jones

I wouldn’t give it so much thought. You’ve got to strip it half down to change the belt, so an inspection of parts is easy enough. Squirt of oil here and there will help.

Are you using a genuine belt? Some of the pattern ones are narrower(5 rib instead of 6)

Definitely a genuine belt used C00116358.
The belt does look worn, the writing no longer visible and the surface matt.September 15, 2013 at 9:21 pm #401125iadom

The only thing that runs on the back of the belt is the jockey pulley, have you had a good look at that?

Two things cause a TD belt to “burn” through at the motor pulley which are tantamount to the same thing, to think otherwise you’ll likely end up chasing ghosts all day long and get nowhere…
Too large a load, stops the drum turning, belt spins on the motor pulley.
Load too wet, not spun well enough, too heavy.
Virtually every single customer to a fault will deny both but, there is no other reason if the correct belt is fitted.
If there’s something up with the jockey wheel or pulley it’d throw the belt before it burnt through it or the faulty would have been that it was as noisy as hell.
For the bearing/s to cause the drum to stop rotating, leaving the motor spinning and chewing its merry way through the belt I’d hope that was obvious enough that a blind monkey could spot the fault. 😉
Meanwhile the customer is thinking… I knew I shouldn’t have tried to dry that king size duvet but they said it was okay in the advert… should be covered by warranty…
It is completely obvious given a little thought.
Think about where the belt will spin given the points of contact, surface area and friction. If the drum is blocked from rotating then the obvious is that it will spin where there is the least amount of friction, kinda like a car’s wheels on a slippy road, the point where there is the lowest friction is the point that you lose traction. On a dryer that would be at the motor pulley as there is a massively less surface area in contact with the best there, so it just spins and spins until there’s nothing to spin anymore because it chewed right through the belt. What you see is a friction burn in one small area. all the way through.
The only even remotely logical explanation is that the load that area of friction has to turn exceeds what it is able to. In other words, it was being used beyond its operational capacity.
So in the absence of an alternative reason that doesn’t come from the Twilight Zone or involves the laws of physics being suspended…

The jockey pulley on these does seize up occasionally , belt stays on but binds on pulley.
