To ensure maximum durability and reliability over time especially with “hard” water, GIAS has decided to manage some new Water Heating Heaters with a protective galvanized surface treatment. The new “nickel plated” Water Heating Heaters are now automatically supplied by GIAS.
Also as of Jan 2014 all nickel coated elements will be rated 240v and not 230v as they are at present. Bringing them more in line with UK standard main voltages.
Boo indeed, I like heater swaps, much easier than bearings as one slips steadily through middle age. Although the 2 year old Hvr I changed the element on last week had coin damage to be honest, pretty soft water around these parts.
European mains voltage was harmonized to 230V in 1995 but in practice power distribution in the UK is still set up for 240V as it would be too costly to upgrade the network.

When using my Loop tester each day ( like most of us do eh?) the average mains voltage reading around west Berks and north Hampshire normally is 235 – 242v during off peak times. So it follows 240 rated heaters are a better choice I reckon.
