OK here the story, firstly I had better explain who the company are and what they are up to. A guy called Matt Jeffers has run a appliance company since 1991 down in Hornchurch. In 1992 he registered a company called Viscount Home Appliances (VHA) which specialised in importing appliances for the UK market. Having now secured a contract to supply appliances to Argos he subsequently set up a Service Operation ‘First4Service’ this is underwritten by ‘Warranty Solution’ (nothing to do with JTM/0800Repairs by the way) I have negotiated the following and they will be or have contacted you for your support in their network —

    Rates – Laundry/Dishwashers/Electric cookers = £41.00 +
    Refrigeration £41 + Sundries £20 + vat where applic.
    Gas cookers £53 +

    Parts supplied FOC

Customer contact – within 6 hours if poss (within 24 hrs)
    Payment within 28 days.

Whilst I appreciate the rates are about average, these will be renegotiated after 12 months. Any queries, just post and I will try to answer them — Ian

Just wanting to clarify how we know our name / area has been passed on? I know on previous occasions we have always had to submit & resubmit coverage details.
    Thanks.

If you are on the list Tim (you are)then your info has been passed on.

The WTA provides access to its members that have expressed an interest, so that info is passed on to interested parties for them to make contact direct.

Do you know if he is attending the WTA meeting in March as I will be there and would prefer to talk to him there.

I don’t think he’s registered, like a number of people methinks.

I’m only saying as there’s a lot of people registered now and space could be an issue as we know the stands are completely packed out.

    And that’s an understatement

I have had both e-mails returned undelivered to Jason@firstforservice.
One was a reply to the e-mail he sent out.

I do not think this would impress the Dragons on Dragons Den.

Will he be just doing the Warenty work or once he has the backing of the WTA members
As agents do he intend on doing an 0800 repairs and try and target the chargeable work.

At the moment the bigger work suppliers find it difficult to get cover in my area so I do really well on chargeable calls.

I would not like to give my support if this is the intention as why would I want to increase the competition in my area for chargeable work.

Why would I want to do the chargeable work for less and have to wait for the money when I get more money and paid on the visit.

If it is just Warenty work then I would be happy to support him.

With a name like First4service this sounds like he may be Trying to start up a 0800 / JTM type service and needs the agents to get it off the ground.

This would be the last thing we need is another 0800/JTM even though the public are beginning to move away from this type of service.

Just something for everybody to think of before committing themselves.

Basically Bob its all warranty work, There is no intention to do anything else.
I will get Ian to check Jason’s email address and I will also get him to ring you to have a chat.
Please all be assured that we won’t ever entertain giving access to our service database to anyone that we don’t feel has the best interests of the independents in mind.
And yes we have declined access to a few once there intentions were obvious ..

Guys – perhaps a little clarification as to what we do here at the WTA regarding service work. From time to time we are approached by manufacturers wanting cover in the UK. It usually comes either as ‘we need a call carrying out in xx postcode area, have you got anyone’ or ‘can you help us set up a service network’ With the former, we just give out the engineers details and suggest that they contact you direct, negotiate a price and get the job done. In the case of the latter we arrange a meeting, discuss what they want and try and help, together with sorting out a national rate for this work. Once this is agreed we supply them with WTA members details and they then contact you direct. Let me now get to the crux of the matter –

    a. The manufacturer contacts you and other than rates and sometimes service level agreements sorts out how you will run the operation with them.
    b. Throughout this process you can either take on the work or not, its totally your choice, if you don’t want it then the manufacturer will make alternative arrangements.
    c. The national rate is agreed to stop (as happened with GIAS) them contacting engineers directly and offering below market rates.
    d. Sofar we have only negotiated with Manufacturers/Importers, we do not offer service to Work Providers. In time we may look into Service for retailers but that is some way down the road.

So to reiterate – it is your choice, having the rates already supplied, to work (or not) with these guys – enjoy 😛
