SMEG WMI12C7 stops mid cycle and clicks

Help and advice requested with my 2 and a half yr old SMEG washing machine.

On all settings, machine will stop once full of water and about to spin or drain. There are no error codes displayed, just a clicking noise coming from the control dial. The stopping happens at different times through the cycle – no consistency at all.

If I turn off the WM at the wall, leave for anywhere between 5 to 20 minutes and turn back on again, it will start up, but only for maybe 2 to 5 minutes before stopping again. LED screen goes blank and the clicking starts again. Any ideas?

I live in a hard water area, and all was fine until I used a de-scaler to clean things up on the inside. The washing machine is not overloaded either.
