ParticipantHi all,
Just wondering how long carbon brushes should last? I purchased and fitted some replacement carbon brushes at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb this year. Today my washing machine stopped spinning, and on inspection the brushes have worn right down.
The machine is used most days, but would you expect them to wear down in under 2 months, or is there something else which has caused it?
Thanks

Should last a lot longer than that, clean armature before fitting or the armature itself maybe badly worn

Thanks. I didn’t clean it before fitting the replacements, so could be that I guess. I assume it’s one of these I need? http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/carbc01- … or-cleaner
Are there instructions included on how to use it?

Yep that’s the part.

It also depends on the quality of the replacement brushes, non genuine pattern spares can sometimes be of very poor quality. Rapid brush wear can also be a sign of a damaged commutator as Andy has said.
What make of machine do you have?

It’s a a Hoover OPH148 washing machine which has a CESET MCA 52/64-148/CY44 motor fitted. I bought the sv1202-ceset brushes from ukwg. Thanks

Oh dear, chances are that is a Chinese made CESET motor, very suspect quality and very likely to be at fault.
Does it say Made in China on the motor label?

Should I think about replacing the motor?

I would check condition of armature 1st. Give it a good clean and try another set of brushes

Thanks Andy, what am I looking for? There is a lot of carbon build up, but I cant see any big pits (although the carbon may be hiding this I guess!)

Use the comm stick to give it a good clean. If motor is on the machine then hold the stick on the armature and spin drum by hand ( unplugged of course )
If motor out then spin the pulley by handMarch 23, 2014 at 6:09 pm #411579iadom

I have to say that I have recently had a success rate of less than 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} when trying new brushes on these shoddy, Chinese motors and I clean the comm very carefully. 😉

I would think about replacing the machine if motor is faulty.

I’ve reseated the brushes and it seems to be working ok which will at least allow me to get the kids uniform washed for next week. The brushes are very worn though so I will get some new brushes ordered.
Thanks for your help
