ParticipantI have a Zanussi Essential 1600 Type #H1946442, Product # 914604030. I bought it ‘used’ and one of the paddles keeps falling off during wash cycles. When I checked the paddle and where it attaches onto the drum, there is a lot of scoring and rippling on the drum material – it looks like someone has tried to seriously force the paddle back on using metal hand tools and the paddle cannot now secure itself to the four lugs!
I managed to flatted out the lugs and clear out the slots in the paddle so that the paddle would slide over the lugs OK. However, it fell off again the next time I used the machine. In sheer desparation I used some J-B Weld cold weld steel reinforced epoxy on the lower faces of the paddle, slid the paddle onto the lugs and left the machine for 36 hours. It lasted three more washes and them fell off again 😡
Looks like I may need to buy another drum or drum liner (if there is such a thing)and perhaps three new paddles!!! Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove and replace a drum / drum liner please?
Also, any ideas on cheapest place to buy the spares?
Thank you all in advance

The replacement drum paddles are indeed clipped into position with the anchor tabs of the stainless tub. However, they can also be screwed and therefore locked into position via removal of the black rubber sump hose.

Hey thanks Martin – how do I remove the black rubber sump hose please? Can I screw them into position using a normal screwdriver or will I need a right-angled one? Is there some sort of service manual available that I can refer to? Your help is so much appreciated

The sump hose secured by a nylon clamp ring, so a 7mm socket screwdriver for that. Then a regular Philips or Pozidriver for screwing the paddle in position through the gaping hole in the tub. Very straightforward DIY exercise overall. 😀

Hi Martin
Followed instructions and fitted small self-tap screw through the visible small hole in the drum liner into the stand-off….perfect.
Then – – – – when I refitted the sump hose over the raised part of the sump ‘hole’ and then tightened the clamp (metal clamp with screw-head and not nylon). Ran machine on rinse cycle and hey presto – water on the floor! Went back to unscrew the clamp and re-seat the sump hose – a rather large lump of old silicon fell down…it has what looked like a mirror image of the sump and sump hose…..looks like someone found that the thing leaked when it was manufactured and tested and then pushed a load of silicon sealant around the sump hole and under the sump hose bit to seal it!!! I guess now I’ll have to do the same!! Any thoughts my friend?

Anyone that uses silicone sealant on a washing machine sump hose is a bodger in every sense of the word. The moulded drum collar is more than sufficient in which to secure the sump hose just using the nylon clamp ring. That is on the assumption the rubber sump hose and it’s clamp ring are located correctly in the first place. Clearly, it seems that may not have been the case at some point in its working life until ‘bodger’ came along?
Perhaps the worse case scenario would be to replace the sump hose to ensure a perfect fit?

A new sump hose it may have to be. By the way, the clamp securing the hose to the collar is metal – like a thin wire jubilee clip with a screw and nut. I’m wondering if the clamp has cut into the rubber of the hose because it is made of rather thin round wire.
Anyway the paddle problem is solved and like many things in my life, when one gets fixed another one pops up broken. Hey Hum.

Sorry if I’m being a pain but is it possible to get step by step instructions on how to remove the sump hose please? I know how to undo the part where it fits onto the drum collar but what about the other two connections?

There is no need to remove the air pressure chamber from the sump hose. The air pressure chamber is secured to the tub with a single screw. The air hose on the top of the air chamber just pulls off and the pump end of the hose has a simple clamp ring. Simples! 😉

Still struggling with leaking water – seems to be from the front left bottom corner. I disconnected the sump hose from the drum collar again and checked to see if there were any splits or cuts and can’t see any. Not clear on how to remove the top end of the sump hose from the air pressure chamber – or the air chamber from the hose at the top of it…did you say it just pulls off? Is there a ball of some sort in the part of the sump hose just below the drum collar – it feels like it?

One other thing I noticed – I’m testing it using the rinse cycle and the leaking seems to start after the machine has filled and when the drum starts to rotate. I’m trying to look underneath and see where the leak is coming from but the only way I can do that is to tilt the machine and then I’m afraid that it will affect the filling.

Threads merged, please keep it to one thread, only leads to confusion if you don’t. 😉
