Hi, I have a Smeg FA720X (S25STRP) Which I believe is just a whirlpool unit with SMEG branding. We have had the Freezer set to -22Deg and the freezer alarm has been going off every day or two (freezer temp goes to ‘–‘), I removed the back cover in the freezer compartment and there was some frost around the fan so I completely defrosted it. I also checked the resistance of the heater unit (240Ohms). This helped for a couple of days but the alarm is now going off again. The fan in the freezer is definately running. I have put a temp recorder inside the unit and recorded the temp over a week, this can be found at the following link:

I am guessing that the periodic spikes (roughly every 8hrs) will be the defrost cycle? The alarm goes off when the spikes last a bit longer like on the 08/06/2016 and the 10/6/2016 on the graph.

    Any ideas?

240 ohms is a very high resistance, are you sure it wasn’t 24 ohms?
You guessed correctly. The periodic spikes are consistent with the defrost cycle, although I thought they should be further apart i.e. 16 hours or thereabouts, but I guess it differs between manufacturers. it looks too consistent a pattern to be a fault.

IIRC there are two heaters on that type of fridge freezer. The first one is the defrost heater and the second is the drain heater. Have you tested both of them?

My money would be on a faulty temperature sender that’s linked to the overheat alarm.
