My newish (~3yr old) has stopped spinning/turning. It has been a wee bit noisy of late but today the clothes came out damp. I noticed the drum would not turn round when I manually turned it to check if there were any socks left stuck on the drum.

I restarted the wash cycle and there are noises of things turning (no doubt the motor) but the drum does not turn. There are no fault codes and the cycle continues as normal until the end abet doing everything else with the drum stationary?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to contact Hotpoint/Whirlpool direct.

It sounds like the main bearings have failed which will mean you will need a complete main drum assembly. Your parts are covered for five years, you will only have to pay the labour charge.

If it is a main drum assembly is this pretty much the machine knackered? Is it worth fixing?

Hotpoint’s labour charge is just over £100, where are you going to buy a new machine for that money. 😉

What would the charge be if I cannot get it under guarantee, as I cannot find any record of the purchase?

Don’t worry about that, they may ask for your model and serial number. They can tell it’s age from that.

Unless of course it is over five years old, as a WMD 740 could well be. In that case it would not be economic to repair. 🙁
