ParticipantMy Hotpoint dishwasher stopped with a loud bang during a cycle.
The plug fuse is blown and the rcb at the consumer board tripped.
It’s been suggested the suppressor/capacitor? could be blown. I’ve identified a plastic component into which the mains feed enters with a live, neutral and earth coming out.
I’ve opened the case and can see no obvious damage to the wiring or components.
How is the suppressor tested and is it worth replacing it?
Many thanksOctober 21, 2017 at 3:02 pm #451289Martin

If the dishwasher is switched off and yet plugged into the mains with the mains on and it still trips the RCD then the mains filter is at fault.
If it only trips once the dishwasher is set to a program and then turned on you can safely rule out the mains filter and start looking elsewhere.
Circulation pump, heater or dispenser solenoid are likely suspects.

Thanks for reply Martin
I have the mains filter off,is there a method of testing it with a multimeter?October 21, 2017 at 4:12 pm #451291Martin

As I hinted in my earlier post, your mains filter is fine. It would show signs of black burn marks if it wasn’t. Put it back and check elsewhere I would suggest.
Not convinced? Read my earlier post and try that ‘test’. 😉

I restored mains and the machine comes on without tripping.
I switched on and the machine fills but I’ve switched it off before it “blew” again!
I think it had started to rinse when it tripped the first time.
Time to call a pro!
Thanks againOctober 21, 2017 at 5:56 pm #451293Martin

OK so now we both know the mains filter is fine. So why now did you switch it off prematurely so we don’t know at what point it trips?
By all means call in a pro but all the same I could help you further toward a possible conclusion as to what may be the issue here.
Run a cycle and let me know exactly at what point the RCD trips 😀

It didn’t only trip but stopped with a loud report.
Will it not cause further damage if I repeat it?October 22, 2017 at 10:23 am #451295paul243

Ok, I’ve started a cycle.
The machine completed the first phase, the cold rinse, and then blew and didn’t empty any water.
When the pump started?October 22, 2017 at 10:28 am #451296Martin

So the likelihood is that the heater may be the culprit? Power off, lid and rh side panel off to access the heater. Are you OK with electrics? Multimeter at the ready for this stage,

Does the heater come on before the pump empties the cold rinse water?

Rh side panel looking from front? Have multimeter at the ready!

Crack on then and check out that heater. Let us know what you find. Any probs and you want hands on help then give a local repair guy a call. 😀
