ParticipantHi
I have a Hotpoint Aquarius WDL540 which is giving problems on both wash and dry operationThere are six lights arranged vertically above the Start/Pause button, rather then five as described in
the error codes section I found on this site, so I am hoping someone can help me identify the error code. When washing the cycle stops with water in the drum and the lights flash as follows:
The first and third (starting from the bottom) vertical lights are illuminated and flashing, (door lock and dryer function)
The four lights beside the additional function buttons (Super Wash, Extra Rinse, Mini Load, Slow Spin), and the light in the Start/Pause button are also flashing. The flashing is continuous. The only way to resolve this is to gravity drain the drum. Once most of the water is drained I can hear a click in the machine and the door lock releases.
When drying the clothes do not dry as water collects in the drum (about 1/4 inch)
The issues described do not happen every time, and I have had wash and dry cycles complete successfully in between the problems outlined
I have checked the following
1: Pump filter, clear and pump rotates
2: Dryer thermistor replaced and heater box lint cleaned
3: Dryer fan, heater, etc appear to be functioningI have also tried unplugging the machine to reset it but that has not worked.
Any assistance would be appreciated, as I am under pressure to get this resolvedRegards

Moderatoryou have a blockage somewhere
I would check the drain hose first. if its under the sink remove the connection and check for blockages, fat build up etc
blockage could also be in the hose from the drum to the pump. where it connects to the drum is a large plastic ball that can stop things working down into the pump and reduce flowDave

ModeratorThose error codes are correct, however it should specify that only the bottom five of the six lights are used for error codes .

ParticipantHi Dave
Thanks for the response.
I will take a another look at the drain hose, and pump. What is the purpose of the plastic ball you mention ?
How would I determine it is causing a problem ?As you indicate blockage as the problem are there any other locations to investigate ?
Thanks. Appreciated

ModeratorThe plastic ball is the ECO ball. The water fills for a few seconds through the cold rinse valve to raise the ball. This blocks off the sump preventing the detergent from being flushed down into the sump, keeping it in the drum for maximum efficiency.

Moderatorthe plastic ball stops the detergent from ending up in the sump hose during initial fill where it would not do a lot of good. the ball effectively floats on the remaining water in the sump sealing it.
because of this ball things like colour catchers can stop at this point blocking the outletDave

ParticipantHi
I have checked the pump, outlet hose, and ECO ball fitting and found no blockage
I removed and cleaned each to confirm and found only very limited sludge in the pipes.I took a look at the circuit board and could see some light black dusting on some components
All capacitors looked fine (no blackening or bulging)
Black dusting observed on yellow components (?) and white box components (relays?) on the board
Board itself had no signs of damageAny comments appreciated as to what if anything this might suggest

ModeratorBlack dust is simply that and nothing else. Dust from the motor carbon brushes that is always found on most pcb’s after several years of use. How is the waste outlet pipe connected at the outlet end, does it go into a standpipe or is it directly connected to the under sink plumbing? Is it possible to try the machine with the outlet hose hooked over the side of the sink?
October 19, 2019 at 2:43 pm #463821ploane
ParticipantWaste pipe goes into a standpipe, not connected to under sink plumbing
I will see if I can run reach it to side of sink and run a cycle and see what happensYou suspect a blockage then ?
How might a blockage explain water accumulating in the drum while drying? Thanks again.

ModeratorIf it goes into a standpipe then you don’t need to try it over the sink. The machine has a small trickle of cold water running in during the drying cycle to keep the condenser cool. Could be a worn pump seizing intermittently? Does it have the pump filter on the front, either way does the pump impeller feel a bit loose with side to side movement?

ParticipantRunning a cycle now with pipe over sink
Checked the standpipe is clear, by running a hosepipe to it, no sign of blockage
Pump filter at front, pump impeller does not feel loose, no side to side movement at all
Pump emptying smoothly into sinkRegards

ParticipantWash cycle completed no issues. Started a second one, with outlet pipe into sink.
The only difference I can determine with regard to outlet pipe is that when run into sink it is higher relative to machine than when run into standpipe.
Having said that, machine has been working run into standpipe for 8-10 yearsWhere is the worm pump you mentioned?

ParticipantA second wash cycle started ok, then quickly seemed to freeze at start of cycle (Vertical LEDs 1 (bottom) and 6 (top) illuminated)
Pressing Start/Pause button did not achieve anything
Pressed On/Off and cycle resumed and is progressing as expected.Any suggestions appreciated.

ParticipantBehavior of previous post repeated. Restarted again by turning On/Off.
Additional water being added at each restart. -
